Students,
Today we took the Biology benchmark exam, and amazingly we finished in 2 hours instead of the allotted two. I hope every one really took their time.
For the classes that I actually did get to see today we finished the Nelson Mandela Video that we started on Tuesday.

We got to take a look at an important man in South African and human history, I hope that you will show this video to your parents or just watch it more closely at home.
My 7th period got to have a little bit of fun during the MatCast and was able to produce this fantastic work of art. http://twomack.imgur.com/
Have a great weekend!

Students,
Today we took a look at the six traits that makes Africa so physically unique. These traits influenced African colonization by decreasing the presented appeal. We will discuss the affects of these on Human Geography as the unit continues.

Students,
January 23rd we worked on our Africa physical map, While one of the least complex maps we have made, it does require you to be aware of several small details. I would like to emphasize the importance of the natural resources, as they have played an integral part to the development of significant pieces of African Culture. I don't want to spoil too much, but Blood Diamonds are actually a thing.
January 24th, we would have worked on the map...but it was too cold and icy. No School.

Students,
Today we got to practice our map reading skills. I know that in our world of GPS systems this may seem a bit outdated, well to some extent you are correct. However, there will be several occasions that you may have to read a map even if it is a Google map.
To that end we looked at several types of maps (climate, natural resources, and physical map) and compared them to population density maps. The goal was to draw conclusions regarding what influences people to live where they do?
As we move forward with the SW Asia unit we will begin to take a look at the Human Geography that makes the region tick, and look for causes to the conflict in the region.
Reminders: AP students your projects are due on February 3rd!!!!

Students,
Over the break the Seguin Highschool staff took an exam called the TSI. This is the test that all incoming freshman who wish to pick a path for our hopeful early college high school program. This program will allow students to earn 60 hours (an associates degree) or up to 42 hours that will be transferable to a four year college. This can save you thousands of dollars (~$21,000 - ~$30,000) in college tuition.
Trying to help our students prepare for the test we have adapted our reading assignments to imitate what they will be seeing on this test. So today we did a reading covering Human Environment Interaction in South West Asia. If you were absent I would be more than happy to give you a copy of this assignment however, I will not be able to upload a copy of the reading to the Blog.

Students,
Today we took our physical notes for SW asia. We also touched on Middle Eastern Culture, but not very much. I would highly recommend devoting some of your personal time to researching this region, it will continue to be a major player in global politics (it is essentially the soap operas of the world) well into the future.

Students,
It is the first day back to school and man was it a doozy! Every classroom received a new seating chart, finally, which were accepted even if they were not truly approved of by you guys. We also started our South West Asia (the Middle East) unit. This is going to be one of our most relevant units of the year and I can not wait to get started!
SW Asia is an area that has a history of conflict and is even seen almost everyday in the news today. From governments being overthrown several times since 2011 and a civil war in Syria it is a non-stop thrill ride of history being made. We will focus on what is causing these conflicts as much as we can but it truly is a very complex subject that can not be entirely explained or even come close to being understood in the time we have allotted for it. But we will do what we can and hopefully give you a good grasp on the situation to take into the world.
That said, today we started our SW Asia maps and got a crash course reminder in classroom procedures and routines. All in all I can say it was a good day. I can't wait to see you all tomorrow.
