PPT for colonial Life
In addition we began to examine the founding of the original colonies. Who started them? Why did they bother to do so? How did they make their money? these were just a few of the questions we took a look at. We implemented a 1- 3 - 6 protocol to make sure the vast amount of information was shared with everyone. Below is the graphic organizer we used. If you were absent, you can fill in the chart from the web, or you should feel free to drop by my tutorials (3:30 - 4:00) to get time with the books.

Important things to remember and bring to discussion tomorrow morning;
Not all colonies were founded by the kindest of people (Georgia) was initially a debtors colony.
Religion played a large role in the motivations of colonists.

The theory of mercantilism as presented regularly is the selling of raw goods to the colonies mother country and then buying the processed gods back for a higher price. The whole process was for the benefit of the mother country economically at the expense of the colonies.Following into the Chesapeake region, the reason for settling was mainly to follow and gain even more land in the Caribbean areas, which the following reason after that was because of the suitable land for planting sugarcane. However this control of the land in the southeast region of North America caused unrest in the Natives in the area. They fought over the land that was being increasingly stolen from them. As for the elites coming from Europe, the main reason was to make an even bigger success for themselves by growing the sugarcane on their plantations using slaves they bought.

I agree with most of this, but what I didn't understand (maybe someone can explain it to me a little bit more) was why they wanted more land in the Carribean area's? Was the land more profitable than the America's at the time? Was it more popular?
Delete-Kayla Price 6th period
They wanted more land in the Caribbean area because they relied mostly on agriculture. Planters and farmers needed irrigation for their crops and the best place to get it is by living on a coast line. The Caribbean is an island, therefore it was much easier to get more water to more places. Also, along the coast the soil is more fertile rather than rocky. This allowed more crops to be grown and more food to be produced.
DeleteWell the Caribbean will later be introduced in The Atlantic Slave Trade, which will give them a boost in labor power. And like Shelby said the source of water is a huge natural resource that there is a lot of.
DeleteI understand the English wanted more land to see that they had more power over the Indians. They should of known the Indians would be furious of them taking their land
DeleteMercantilism is buying and selling goods to your country to make more prophet. They settled in the Chesapeake area it was good for sugarcane plantation and was good for farming. It later caused problems with Native Americans. The coast line was a great place for the things they needed. They jeopardize their relationship with the natives. Even though the land belong to the Native Americans in the first pace. The elites only came to become more successful and to gain more land and money. They wanted to be land owner that could make the money.

ReplyDeleteMercantilsim is basically buying goods for cheap, making it better for cheap, then selling it for much more profit. The Chesepeak region was settled because it was a good spot to plant sugarcane and to make a profit off of the land. Even though they gained this profit there was a minor set back. It caused them to bot have a very good relationship with Natives because originally of course that land was their's. The main reason the elites came to the America's was basically pride and money. They wanted to be able to say "I went to the America's, and made a big profit off of it and you didn't." Even though not everyone made a profit off of the land.
ReplyDelete-Kayla Price 6th period
You're right the Natives didn't make any profit
DeleteI agree, the natives had absolutely nothing to gain in the migration of the Europeans. But I also believe that since some of the earlier migrations were made from the Quakers, that they had an important role because they may have lead the rest of the Europeans to come to the New World and establish their colonies and eventually kick out the Native Americans.
DeleteThe native Americans made some prophet but the mostly traded with whom they knew and the could hunt and crop on their on and didn't need to trade with many other
DeleteI also believe that the Quakers had a big role in migration to the New World. They came to North American and made a good settlement for their people which made the other people from Europe want to do the same for themselves. Which again forces the Natives to move to another area due to more Europeans coming to the New World.
DeleteMercantilism is buying things for cheap and turning around and selling them for a profit. The Chesapeake was settled because not only was it a great place to grow sugar cane and other cash crops, it was easily irrigated. However, the settling of Europeans in the area caused conflicts with the natives. The natives did not want to give up the land that was being stolen from them. The reason the Elites came from Europe was to make themselves a success. They came and realized that they could cheaply make a profit out of the land. They also used cheap labor such as slaves to make their profit even bigger.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your statements.
DeleteMercantilism works when a colony sells raw products to its mother country for cheap. The colonizing country then makes the raw products into finished ones and sells them back to their colonies for a higher price. The Chesapeake was the site of one of the first English settlements. It was also a good place to grow sugar. Indentured servants were brought there to be used for labor. the relationships between the settlers and the natives ended in arguments. The Elites wanted to take land to make profit to be prosperous, but the natives didn't want to lose what belonged to them.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the belief in the benefits of profitable trading. In other words it deals with innovating cheap items so that you can turn around and sell them for profit.Looking at the Chesapeake, the purpose of settling their was to make a mass produce off sugar cane and later rum. With the Chesapeake manufacturing a mass produce of sugar the economy pretty much belonged to them.Well here comes the conflict, who is going to farm all this sugar? The Native Americans that lived there were forced into slave labor to the point where they were worked to death. After this the elites of Europe moved to the Americas add started to work the sugar farms using more slaves that they bought. This would later lead into The Atlantic Slave Trade.

Their relationship with the Native Americans was not good because they took over their land and used them for labor. The Elites came over to make a profit and become successfully off of the land here.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between them was indeed not good.
DeleteI wouldn't want to be friends with them either I mean... it was their land to begin with. It's just plain rude.
DeleteWell if I was one of the natives I would be very angry as well. The colonists pretty much came over from some random place, kicked in the natives doors, kicked them out of their own homes, and said this is our land now go find somewhere else to call your own.
DeleteWell if I was one of the natives I would be very angry as well. The colonists pretty much came over from some random place, kicked in the natives doors, kicked them out of their own homes, and said this is our land now go find somewhere else to call your own.
Deletealso with having slaves it meant more work was getting done which means the slave owners are making more of a profit.
DeleteThe natives also suffered from disease greatly when the Europeans came and so, they correctly associated the disease with the Europeans. This could of led to hate as lots of natives believed in spirits and maybe thought the Europeans were killing their families with some sort of evil spirit. The Europeans did help the natives in some ways though, by bringing new technologies and crops.
DeleteAt first, they started with tobacco and cotton (which wasn't a success) but then, They indeed had the most luck with sugar cane. They also discovered sugar cane could be distilled into rum, which grew popular as more sugar cane was made, the market industry was booming for sure, which is why most planters devoted most, if not all of their land to sugarcane. Because growing all of this sugarcane needed lots of tending, they had to import laborers, in the beginning coming from England, but then turned into more help from the Enslaved African workforce.

Mercantilism is buying items for as little as possible and then selling them for a very expensive price. Colonists settled in the Chesapeake region because sugar cane could be grown there, which then lead to the Natives in that region to be used as labor slaves, leaving a bad relationship between the colonists of that region and the Natives. The Elites settled there because of the three G's, God, Gold, and Glory.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is also when a colony sells unfinished products to its mother country, who then finishes them into new products to sell back to the colony.

Slavery economically enhanced the Caribbean islands due to the production of sugar and rum.The English mainly relied on the use of imported labors from Africa. Unlike Chesapeake which mainly used indentured servants for work force.African slaves were a principle sources of profit for those colonies. Spain during the time was migrating north west towards California leaving a devastating footprint on the native tribes, from imported diseases. With the remaining natives the Spanish tried to convert them to catholicism. They did the same to the African slaves. Promising freedom if they agreed to convert.

Along with the English relying on African slaves for labor, unlike the white indentured servants, the African slaves didn't need to be let loose because there was no threat that they would become a volatile class that didn't own any land.
DeleteWhen the indenture servants of the Chesapeake area started rebelling the Chesapeake settlers also turned to an imported work force because they were cheaper.
Deletesomeone please explain why they had to use slaves
DeleteMercantilism is basically buying goods for cheap and selling them at a higher price for a bigger profit. The colonists had chosen the Chesapeake Bay area as a spot for settlement because it was a excellent region to produce sugar cane. The colonists then basically using the natives as a free labor source. Settling in the area caused the Europeans to have a bad relationship with the natives because the Europeans came over and took the land from the natives. Slavery also helped the Europeans a lot, having slaves meant less work you and lots of slaves could get a lot done. Having lots of slaves and growing lots of crops meant more of a profit for you. Also with slaves you aren’t having to pay someone to do the work since you own the slaves, they do all the work. Having slaves also showed that you had power and money.

They also used distilled sugarcane to produce rum, which led to a booming market.
DeleteRight! Also the African slaves greatly contributed to the economic development of the Southern colonies. Because without the slaves growing the sugar, the colonists would not have made as much money as they did. With all the slaves, the colonists could sell double the sugar and double the rum, which was their main source of profit.
DeleteMercantilism is, buying items for a cheap price and then selling them for more then what they are worth. Chesapeake Bay was a benificial place to plant sugarcane and the colonists who settled there were able to make profit off of that land. This settlement caused the colonists to have a bad relationship with the natives of Chesapeake Bay. But because of power, most of the natives were enslaved by the settlers.
ReplyDeleteThe Elites coming from Europe were there for God, Gold and Glory.
I agree, what also damaged the relationship between natives and settlers was the numerous deaths brought to the natives through diseases.
DeleteGood point grace! The diseases did have a huge impact on the amounts of death.
DeleteIn southern colonies like the Caribbean, slaves gathered together and attempted to form their own cultures, where they attempted to stick together as families and tried to sustain their distinct African cultures and religions. This was different from the colonists in the south who were mostly wealthy men who frequently left their estates to go back to their homes in Europe, so subsequently saw no point in building churches or schools. Mercantilism is when a country seeks to control as much capital as possible by lowering their imports and raising their exports to other countries. Colonists from Europe came to the Chesapeake bay area to find gold, grow sugar, and tobacco and to gain religious freedom not found in Europe. By becoming plantation owners European elites could grow large amounts of tobacco and get rich as tobacco was highly sought after in Europe. The problem with tobacco however, was that it ruined the soil it was grown on, so as tobacco was grown colonists had to go deeper and deeper into the Chesapeake region to find land, which was actually already occupied by the natives in America. This struggle for land led to tension between colonists and natives, with the colonists eventually overcoming the natives and becoming the dominant players in the Chesapeake region.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point about the development of unique cultures by slaves in the Caribbean. They were able to resist Christianity and continue on out with their personal culture. Also, as you said, tobacco led to multiple conflicts between the natives and colonists due to its increasing demand around the world. Not only did it orevoke destruction of native land, it demanded the use of slave labor to increase profits as much as possible. Tobacco played an extremely important role to the development of society in this region.
DeleteMercantilism is buying goods for cheap, improving them in some way, then selling them for a higher price than what you originally paid for them in order to make a profit. The reason to settle on the Chesapeake Bay is because Argriculture is important and this land is fertile and good for farming due to its proximity to the coast. The Native Americans and the colonists did not have a good relationship because this land was previously the Native Americans. Elites came from Europe to America because they were cocky and wanted to tell everyone that they made money off of going to America. This turned out to bite them in the butt later on because they ended up not making as much money as they wanted to.
ReplyDeleteWhy did the mother country want to practice mercantilism? What do the colonies get out of the deal?

DeleteThe theory of mercantilism is that trade generates wealth. A colony selling goods for a low price to its mother country, then the mother country sells it for a higher price. The reason for settlement in the Chesapeake region was to increase colonization. The settlers wanted to gain more land. English settlers soon discovered sugar was the most lucrative crop. Planters then devoted almost all their land to sugarcane crops. There was a negative relationship with the natives. The settlers were stealing their land for profit and using natives as labor slaves.

The theory of mercantilism is the process in which a colony provides raw materials, such as lumber, to the mother country in order to be made into finished goods. The colony would then buy these finished goods and mostly all trade was regulated to only the colony and the mother country. The reason for settlement in the Chesapeake region simply has to do with the amount of profitable land in that region which could be used for the growing of crops. This is where slavery becomes the foundations for plantations of all sorts and really helps the economy boost with huge benefits for plantation owners. On a political side, with the labor power of slaves the rich would become richer and, therefore, their power in politics could increase. This also would mean their social status would keep rising and the gap between the elites and the slaves would widen drastically. In addition, the initial reason for elites to come to this region was their aspirations to increase their riches from the profits of crops grown on plantations. During this the new settlers had to encounter Indian tribes thought the Americas. The French had a rather stable relationship with the Indians unlike the English who looked mostly to displace them. As a result, the English became the dominant force in North America and drove many Indians to other areas for the time being.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the idea that one can buy raw materials for a low price, construct something out of those materials, and then sell that item at a higher price to make a profit. The Europeans first came to the Americas to seek land, become rich, and escape religious persecution. The colonists believed they could make their profits off of growing tobacco and cotton, but after realizing the climate and soil was too poor to grow those crops, they turned to sugarcane. The sugarcane was a huge success because it not only produced sugar which was a huge success in the Americas, but it also produced rum. There was a huge market for rum oversees, so the colonists decided to buy the sugarcane crop at a low price, grow the sugar at no expense, turn the sugar into rum, and then sell it abroad to make a great profit(mercantilism!) The reason to why the colonists the colonists settled in the Chesapeake area was to make money off of growing tobacco and cotton, but as mentioned before, they turned to sugarcane which made them more successful as expected. The relationship between the natives and colonists was not necessarily a good one, since the Europeans kept claiming the land the natives had already established as theirs. Due to the harsh climate, the colonists would often flee back to Europe, taking their riches with them. When the colonists would leave, they would leave their land to their overseers. The African slaves didn't contribute to the political and social organization of the Southern colonies as much as they did to the economic development. Without the slaves, the Europeans would not have been able to cultivate as much land, produce as much sugar, or sell as much rum as they did. The Europeans were successful economically because of the African slaves.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I really like how in-depth you go into your answer! It really clears up most confusion. But I do disagree with the part about how slaves didn't contribute that much to the political and social side of the South. I believe that the South based its whole society on the slaves. They did in fact have a economic boost because of them, but slaves played a huge role in all the other aspects of the South. Other than that I agree with the rest of your answer.

Mercantilism is the process where raw materials are produced and the manufactured to be sold in hopes of making a higher profit. Chesapeake was settled to start a new life (and hopefully a successful one for colonists) through agriculture. Much like the elites, who came to make a name for their families by owning land and having successful crops. Coming to the new land meant interacting with the peoples that have lived there before the colonists. The relationship with the natives depended on the type of people that settled in the area. Many used force and harsh conditions as a way to get natives to do what they wanted. Others felt that they had to come to a middle ground with the natives to ensure that both sides got what they wanted. Of course, things changed as time went on and it soon made tensions rise between the settlers and natives. Frequent revolts were a outcome of forced labor. Settlers also found forced labor with slaves. Slavery allowed for the economy to grow by being a way of cheap labor.

Did overcrowding in England also influence the elites to come to America?
DeleteThey failed at growing tobacco in the Chesapeake bay area? As far as I remember, tobacco was the cash crop of the Virginia area, and that is most definitely in the Chesapeake bay area.
DeleteMercantilism is basically gaining raw materials and then making something profitable out of it and selling it for a slightly higher price than the actual raw material bought in the beginning. There were two main reasons for the migration of Europeans to the Americas. The first reason was because some of the Europeans were Quakers and their belief system wasn't very popular in Europe,so they decided to move and be able to freely associate in their own state of mind and focus on the way they express their belief system. The second reason was because most Europeans just wanted to look for land that could help them make a profit back home. In the beginning of their conquest, they turned to the Chesapeake land because they wanted to grow tobacco and cotton, since they thought that, that was the way to go, but they soon realized that those two crops were leading them no where, so they turned to sugarcane. After a while of seeing that they were making an exceptional profit out of the sugar, they quickly thought about having laborers especially work jut for the sugarcane plantation, so that's where the African slaves come along. Even though there were very few whites working as laborers, they wanted more and more Africans working for them, especially since they thought that it was cheaper to just get new slaves ever so often than to take care of the ones they already had because of the harsh working environment. I believe that the African slaves were basically there to help the Europeans grow into a big economic factor. Socially, the slaves were just put as the lowest class there could exist, even though they did all the work and basically made who Europe is now, then, politically, they just never really had a say, so they were once again viewed as the lowest type of class that there was. So, the point of the lesson was that while the African slaves were working their butts off in trying to pleasure the Europeans, the Indians were getting kicked out of the land that they had settled in the very beginning, so moral of the story, the Europeans weren't a very respectable society.

England used mercantilism to get rich. THey created a system that made the colonies completely dependant on the homeland. The English settled int the chesapeake bay area due to the acces to water and the fertile land. The settlers grew sugarcane which was a labor intensive crop so they needed slaves. They started off using endentured servants from england but they eventually turned to Africans for there slaves. In california the spanish used the native peoples for slaves which obviously created friction between the two groups. The elites came from england to increase their wealth. They did this by becoming plantation owners. Slavery helped the economies of the southern colonies by providing a cheap labor force. It created social diversity because it brought africans to the americas and the africans brought their culture. it also made the need for big cities non existent because the plantation owners had everything they needed right there on their plantation.

Slavery in the South impacted the people there in many ways. Economically, slavery provided a huge advantage for those who could afford it as this labor was essentially free (besides the purchase price) and allowed them to keep their net profit high. For those who couldn't afford it, though, this influx of labor made their way of life almost nonexistent. For the small farmers, they just couldn't keep up with the large plantation owners profit-wise, and ended up selling out. For the non-landowners, those men who were no longer indentured, the slaves replaced them as farm hands and left them with little work. Because of these economic changes, plantations became the most common sight in the south, which meant more distance between people which meant very few cities or centers of social activity such as churches or educational institutions such as schools. As the landless and educated left for the Northern colonies, the Southern "gentlemen" set up legislative bodies where only white land-owning men could vote, which was most every white man in the South at the time thanks to the mass emigration caused by the newly bought slaves. Those political bodies endured for a very long time, even after more and more people without land began moving south, and continued in some cases for decades after slavery was ended before anyone else was allowed in.
ReplyDeleteThe theory of mercantilism is the belief that the more you trade, the more money you have, and many colonizing countries forced their colonies to trade only with them thanks to this idea.
The Chesapeake region was settled in part because of the bay, which provided protection from the ocean and attacks by sea, as well as many places to build docks and other places where one could easily send supplies to be shipped off back to the mother country. Also, the Chesapeake area was, as the colonists found later, a decently fertile land, which made it perfect for growing a variety of crops. The Native Americans who inhabited the area were also mostly accepting of the strangers (at least until the strangers started shooting) and helped them survive their first few years.
Elites that ventured to the Americas from the safety of their homelands were either looking to gain glory from the expedition or even more money. The governors that the King sent over were good at freely handing out hundreds and hundreds of acres of prime land to the aristocrats who came to America, partly to encourage them to stay, and partly to keep them happy with the King. Also, there were the governors themselves (who had come over for the power) who often had huge estates and imported rare goods that few if any of the colonists could afford. Thanks to this imbalance of land granting, there soon came to be an "aristocrat" class of sorts in the Americas, composed of the elites who had been granted land.
Mercantilism is the theory of a mother country getting raw materials from its' colonies and selling a finished product at a higher price. The Chesapeake region was a very optimal choice to settle because of the availability to grow sugar cane a lot and with easy access to water. Many slave laborers were used. The relations with the natives ended poorly due to the colonists removal of the natives from their land. The elites came from Europe to make money off of the land.

The development of slavery in the southern colonies indirectly shaped the colonies. Economic systems were built around the free labor of slaves, and the colonial government was put in place to ensure slavery would stick around. Southern society was formed around the needs of slavery because slavery was a large part of its foundation.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was an economic system put in place to make a colonizing country (like England or Spain) as much money as possible. A colony is established, and then starts producing a good (like Cotton and Tobacco). This good is sold to the mother country relatively cheap, and the mother country then creates a finished product (like clothing) and sells it back to the colony at a higher price.
The Chesapeake region was settled largely because more land was needed. More land equals more farming, and more farming equals more money. More money equals more parties at the King's house.
The relationship with the natives started off rocky, with the English displacing the natives, while the Spanish converted the natives, and the French often joining the natives. Eventually middle ground was found on all fronts for a short time, but the more influence the European powers had, the more unstable their relationship with natives became.
The elites came to the Americas seeking many things, most being money. English businessmen sought their fortunes, while many protestant religious groups sought freedom. The Spanish wanted what they've always wanted, to convert more people, to get rich, and be the best country there is to be. The French like most other European countries, wanted to be rich and powerful.

They governed themselves and the kind was giving out acres of free land and also had land that the elites could afford they were very cocky and wanted everyone to know about but it didn't work in there favor because they ended up not making as much money as they could.
The Relationship with the Natives was off and on it depended on what area you lived in, But most Natives hated the white men because they were forced in slave labor and was something they didn't buy into.

The natives hatred and conflict also stemmed from the way the Europeans viewed political systems (leadership) and settlement (land rights). The Europeans actions were that of "What I see, is what I get," no if, ands, or buts. It is safe to say that a lot of conflicts regarding land, were that of the Elites wanting to permanently claim the land. Peaceful ties with Natives lasted when the Elites understood that they could use the land and not claim it. Most conflicts were also from miscommunications of the cultures involved not necessarily forced labor.
DeleteYou are correct in what you stated, however the way it is written sounds as if it is a generalization. Slave labor is more of a specific reason conflicts arose between the Natives and Elites, not the main reason.
Mercantilism being the driving force behind colonization, when colonists settled in the Chesapeake area they tried to use indentured servants to work their plantations like they did in the Caribbean. However that didn't work out because the indentured servants wouldn't stand for the harsh treatment and intense labor, so settlers turned to importing slaves. The use of slaves increased the export rate, which helped the economy grow but also the growth of social classes in terms of money and power.

The climate there was so extreme that even the European slave owner's life expectancy was lowered to 40 years and the slaves were not expected to live more than 10 years. It also didn't help that they were planting such a labor-intensive crop (sugar).

DeleteMercantilism is buying raw goods for a cheap price and manufacturing something to sell back to make profit. Slavery was pretty much the only reason the south had an economy. They did the planting, harvesting, tending, etc. Slaves gave the colonies a new social class. ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the theory of profitable trading with the New Colonies and their Motherland (restricted trade). The Elites settled in the new land and exported its resources to their Motherland in order for them to be made into finished products; these goods would then be sold back to the New Colonies.
The Chesapeake region (or Southern Societies) was in close proximity to water sources and harbored rich, fertile soil. The land offered the right environment for tobacco, which became high in demand. The need to mass produce the crop, yielded need for labor such as slaves (indentured and/or African Americans). The settlement of land in the New World caused both positive and negative effects especially with the Native Americans. Some colonies created friendship and trading ties with the Natives, whereas other colonies created mass conflict due to power struggles. In addition, the native population drastically decreased due to the introduction of diseases from the Europeans.
In plain, Europeans came from Europe to the New World in search of God, Gold, and Glory. Many also left to escape religious persecution, over-populated areas, famine, and poverty.

DeleteMercantilism can be described as buying cheap goods and trading them to make a profit. The English and the Spanish settled in the Chesapeake region to make some profit off of the land. They originally came to the new land to look for gold, silver, and a northwest passage to Asia. They discovered that sugar canes could make them some money. Since sugar canes were labor intensive crops the settlers needed to hire more people to work the crops. They relied highly on slaves and by the 14th century there were 4 times as many slaves as whites. The French had a good relationship with the tribes from the start while the British had to learn. However, the arrival of the Spanish in California was not the best for the natives. Most of the Natives died because of the diseases brought over by the Spanish settlers.
ReplyDeleteI agree nadia, my question is why we're they looking for a passage to asia? Was it for trade purposes?
DeleteMercantilism is the belief that you buy cheap goods, make them better then you sell them to make a profit. The Chesapeake region had very fertile soil and had close proximity to water which helped agriculturists grow sugar cane which was high in demand at the time and was a reason for settlement. This caused the settlers to kick the native Americans off their land and force them into slavery which caused them to not have a good relationship with them. The elite came for three reasons, god, gold, and glory.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the idea that you buy cheap goods then turn it around for a large profit. This was one of many reasons the colonies came to be. Slavery was established because of this ideal, as Britain wanted more goods. So when the call came that they needed more goods, in order to keep it cheap, they turned to slave labor.
ReplyDeleteThere were so many negative effects from all this constantly increasing slave labor in the colonies. The Europeans didn't even seem to realize it because of how selfish they were being.
DeleteOnce the English settlers discovered sugar, they turned to slavery. The growing market in Europe and abroad was too good for them to pass up, so they started importing indentured servants as laborers. Eventually, they shifted to enslaved Africans (like the Spanish). Sugar was their most valuable crop so they were determined to produce it effectively. Mercantilism, an economic theory involving trade, wealth, and government protection, was put into effect when heavy taxes were placed on imported British sugar.
ReplyDeleteSocially, young males were prominently settling in the Chesapeake Region as small farmers. There was a huge lack of church, family, and community in this area. Conditions were harsh and slaves were often worked to death. The English were aggressive and ambitious people, so African slaves began forming their own personal cultures involving family, religion, social traditions, and resistance patterns to cope with their lifestyles.
There was extreme tension and conflict between the English and Spanish. The English began encouraging Indian slave to rise up, then the Spanish decided to offer freedom to any African slaves willing to convert to Catholicism. Those who volunteered formed a Spanish military that failed at defending against English pursuits.
Originally, Elites came from Europe and to the Americas for freedom, refuge, and restoration. At first, many settlers lived side by side with the natives sharing land and ideas, but over time, the Europeans dominated through proprietary land ownership and countless conflicts arose.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism was the motherland's belief that they could force their colonies to sell their raw materials for cheap, while they made finished products and sold them at a high price in order to increase income. People settled in the Chesapeake region hoping to either make a living, express their own religion, or to become known in the world. Sadly most of them died due to famine, and diseases and only survived by help of the natives and farming of tobacco, sugar, and corn. So now the question is, how did the English repay them? They back stabbed them by giving them diseases, taking their land, and slaughtered a lot of their people. That's not the only race of people the English harmed though. When the elites came over to the new world they were hoping to find a way to increase their income as well. They found that farming cotton and sugar could increase their income tremendously, but the problem was how to farm large amounts of the resource. They ended up buying slaves to work for free, take harsh treatments, and reproduce to increase the amount of workers. The elites overall became known as plantation owner's.

I couldn't agree with you more Juan. I like the way you made the relationship simpler and easier to understand and still being able to include some important details between the Natives and the English.
DeleteEuropeans left Europe for the Americas in pursuit to make money, gain land, and get religious freedom. The first place the English formed a permanent settlement in North America was in Chesapeake Bay. The Bay offered good harbors and lots of land. The Natives that occupied this land were almost completely wiped out by the epidemics and conflicts the Europeans brought. The Europeans attempted to use the land to grow tobacco and cotton. However, after being unsuccessful, they shifted to producing sugar. Sugar was a great investment for the settlers to grow because it allowed them to fulfill their duty as a colony. The idea of mercantilism says that colonies should provide their mother countries with raw materials, so they can produce goods and sale them back to the colony at a higher price. Sugar was in high demand in Europe especially because it could be distilled in rum. This made sugar an almost perfect investment, until they realized how much labor it required. At first indentured servants from England performed the work until they turned their nose up at the strenuous labor. Now the plantation owners in the Caribbean had to rely heavily on African slaves. The slaves helped the economy out a lot by providing free labor. The Europeans in the Caribbean didn't form a strong sense of culture because they lacked churches, family, and community. If they were able to financially, they would leave their farms in the hands of overseers and return to Europe. Due the fact that they left and the African's couldn't, the culture of the slaves was able to develop at a faster rate. They established families, religion, and traditions which heavily influenced Chesapeake socially.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you explained the way mercantilism effected the sugar industry and how that in turn effected the rum making process and began the use of slaves in the Caribbean!
DeleteThe idea of mercantilism is the idea of using your land or others or using good in order to make a profit for yourself. This idea brought many settlers to the Chesapeake region in order to make profit off of the land, seeing as the cash crop in that region was Sugar cane due to the high demand. Sugar can was easy to grow in the fertile soil and easy to transport due to the location. This basically prompted the settlers to boot the natives and force them into slavery in order to grow and deliver the sugar cane to the towns of the settlers. This all cause the relations with the natives to decline drastically and made a very bad relationship with the natives of the land. Those who were elite and settled into the land came to make themselves rich to spread religion and to have their names immortalized in history, which just translates into the three G's, God, Gold, and Glory

ReplyDeleteSlavery contributed greatly to the development of southern colonies, to an extent that its identity became completely different to that of the North. Economically, slaves were labor: bought cheaply from Arabic slavers to work on plantations (sugarcane in the Caribbean and Brazil and cotton and tobacco in what would be the US)to work as nonhuman creatures under inhumane conditions until they inevitably died. They were a huge part of the South's economy and the white elites' wealth was largely based in slave labor. Socially, the huge number of Africans bringing their original culture along with them helped create a sort of niche in America--their religions, beliefs, rituals, etc.--which later became known as Creoles. The existence of slavery in the South also assisted the wealth gap between the colors as well as whites believing they were far superior. Politically slavery changed the South since, as it became such a huge part of Southern culture, decisions would be made based on slavery by white elites, such as starting the Civil War in the 1860's.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is when raw goods from an undeveloped country are sold cheaply to their colonizing country, where they are finished and sold back to the colonies for a high price. The Chesapeake region was originally settled in because it was thought to be a good place to grow tobacco and cotton. When those two cash crops didn't work out, another was decided upon: sugarcane, which had many uses including its role of an important drink of the time; rum. At first, European relationships with natives were rather friendly--working together, trading, even marrying, depending on the region--but as time passed and natives were used for labor and had their sacred lands taken and defiled, these relationships soured. European elites migrated to the New World, as they called it, for wealth. Here were these vast, uncharted lands, bought for cheap but with fortunes and names made upon them. Who wouldn't want to have a share in that? (Spanish conquistadors were slightly different in the fact that they conquered, not settled, and came for Gold, God, and Glory.)

Mercantilism is the buying of cheap raw goods and then selling them for a much higher price in order to make profit. The reason for English Settlement in the Chesapeake region , their first place of settlement, was due to sugarcane. They could grow sugarcane and use indentured servants/slaves to make a substantial amount of profit from it. They held a bad relationship with the Natives overall. Europeans took over the Natives land, used them for labor, and over time eventually dominated over the Natives. The Europeans and Natives, however, were able to exchange and share some cultural values. The Elites came to the Americas to try and make a larger profit than they would in Europe and to be able to express freedom of religion. They basically wanted to try and become better than what they were in Europe. To do this they purchased land and used indentured servants/African Slaves to help them make profits off of cash crops.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is a system where a country uses it's colonies to supply raw goods that they can buy for cheap and manufacture to sell for a high price and profit off of. Men came to the Chesapeake bay region to own small farms and try to make a lot of money in the new world selling raw goods back the mother country. However, since many of the crops that grew well in the south destroyed the soil (tobacco especially) and many famers couldn't really use the land that they had just invested their life into. On the other hand, the farmers who made a lot of profit off of the early boom of tobacco and various other crops bought many of the smaller farms that had failed and this led to the start of the first plantations. When the farmers started buying more land they ran into territorial issues with the natives. Since the natives believe in sharing the land and having everyone benefit from the crop production, the idea of owning the land and using it for your own selfish benefit really clashed with what the natives thought was morally right. The men who came and made huge profits off of the land that they took ended up becoming plantation and slave owners. They ended up becoming the image that pops into our head of a southern man in a crisp white suit, sitting on his front porch overlooking his land, with iced tea in his hand and a cane in the other. The elitists of the old world became elitists in the new world too and they soon became twisted in their old ways.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you included the example of the wealthy southern man drinking iced tea on his porch. It really helps you visually understand the development of plantations!
DeleteMercantilism can be defined as when a Mother country buys raw materials from its colonies for a low price. And turns those materials to goods and essential items. Then they sell the new items back to the colonies for a very high profit. People settled into the Chesapeake area because of fertile land and the easy irrigation. At first the settlers each had land of there own, 50 acres per head. But soon lost their land and a monopoly was formed of giant plantations who enslaved African Americans and the local native Americans. Being enslaved and having their land being taken away from them made the Native Americans very angry with the colonist. Once the plantations realized tobacco was not making the money it once used to, the plantations switched to sugar because of the ease at which it grows and the demand of it in the mother country. Many elites from Europe came to the colonies to make money off of owning huge plantations and being categorized as “white land owning males.”
ReplyDeleteMercantilism, from my understanding is the process of powerful countries creating colonies so that they may abuse said colonies for profit and even more power. They settle colonies in places that contain certain raw goods, have those colonies mine and refurbish these goods, and then finally "buy" these goods extremely cheap, only to turn around and sell them for larger amounts of pay. In the end, the colonies were really just slaves, who thought they were worth more than what they really were.
ReplyDeleteNow, as for the settling of the Chesapeake Region, and why it happened, it's rather simple. One of the main factors in this, again, goes back to power. Large countries grow hungry for more power, and where better to feast than on the Caribbeans? Another big playing factor in this would be, that's right, you guessed it... no, not Jack Sparrow, it's sugar! The popular substance that ruins your health has to be grown somewhere, and what better place than the Caribbean!
Time to talk about Indian relations! As you can already guess, they're not good! The Europeans are coming down to take land, and that land belongs to the Indians, and Indians being one with the land are far from being happy with any of this. Battle's rage, scalps are missing, and people are just not safe. One second you're settling your colony, and the next, you're fighting off a bunch of semi neked angry Natives.
Finally, I shall discuss why Elite class member came from Europe to America! The question everybody is asking, is, "Why come to the land of nothing, when you were living in a land you had everything?". Well the answer is simple. To have even more of everything! That's right, America is becoming the land of opportunities, right after all the elites come in and take every opportunity to become an even bigger and richer success! They even come with their come with their own slaves, and they begin their journey to the top again! All of this while farming sugarcane, that's right, started from the top, and now they're going back to the top.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism is a way for the mother country to profit off of the colonies by allowing them to only do business with them. That way the mother country gets what they want and they still keep the colonies in business. As for the reasons for settling in the Chesapeake region, it's simple, the land was just right for sugarcane, and at that time, that's where the money was. The relationship between the Natives and the settler were pretty much all the same. Some relationships just came a little faster than the others. It took some settler groups awhile to find out that if they had good relations with the natives, they could then acquire more land to grow their business which in return gave the English even more power. This then led to hostile relations because the English eventually took advantage of the Natives. Which then led to land owners having to depend on slaves for cheap labor.

Mercantilism is when a colony makes goods and sells them to their mother country, who processes these goods and sells them back to the colonies for a higher price. The Chesapeake region was a great place for settlement because it was a good location to grow crops that were high in demand such as sugarcane. They tried to grow tobacco and cotton, but were unsuccessful and found that sugarcane was a much more valuable crop. Slavery became popular in the Chesapeake region mostly because of the demand for sugarcane. This greatly affected slaves coming from Africa and land owners because the climate was very harsh. Many slaves were worked to death often purposely because it was cheaper to buy more slaves then to keep existing slaves healthy. On the other hand, these slaves created a very elaborate culture while living in America, much more so then the Europeans. They also helped the economy by farming and harvesting sugarcane, which was so valuable and high in demand. Although many Native Americans were killed by various diseases brought by the Europeans, in some regions the Natives and English figured out ways to live together by trading and treating each other with respect and hospitality, yet there were still tensions between Natives and Europeans in some areas. The Natives faced Europeans trying to take their land and the Spanish wanting, of forcing, them to convert to the Catholic religion which resulted in hostility. The European elites came for land and wealth, hoping to start a prosperous life as plantation owners in America.

DeleteThe development of slavery greatly contributed to the economic, political, and social organization of the colonies and forever changed how their societies functioned. The beginning of slavery in North America was from English migrants from the West Indies who brought with them slaves and the Barbados slave codes. Slaves, although treated poorly and worked to death, were able to bring some of their culture along to the New World as well. An example of this is shown in the Caribbean, where their cultures blended to form a new faith. The economy of the South desperately relied on slaves due to the abundance of plantations; slavery is what built the nation. These plantations also slowed the growth of cities, schools, and churches because there was less of a need for them than in the North.
ReplyDeleteThe theory of mercantilism is one country using one of its colonies specifically for profit. The colony is exploited and the only reason of its existence is to serve the mother country. An example of how this works is shown by a colony selling cheap raw materials to the mother country, who then sells back a manufactured good at a higher price.
The Chesapeake region was mainly settled for farming, such as sugarcane, due to the head-right system. This system gave fifty acres of land per person and encouraged immigration to the Americas in order to farm.
There was a lot of tension between the natives and the colonists. The more the English wanted to expand the more the conflicts rose, making their relationship very unstable. This was why conflicts like the Bacon's Rebellion and King Philip's War occurred.
Elites came to the Americas seeking either an opportunity to make more money or to escape religious persecution. There was an abundance of land available that profit could have been made off of, especially by the establishment of a plantation. Also there were many people who belonged to religious minorities that wanted to escape imperial power.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism is when you buy products or goods for an inexpensive price, and then go and sell it for a higher profit. A big reason for the Chesapeake settlement was because they had a ton of profit-making land by farming a surplus of tobacco and cotton, as well as sugarcane which was hugely successful. Having this land helped to further advance the colony. A downfall to owning this land was that it had belonged to the Native Americans before which brought a little uneasiness between the two which caused them to have a bad relationship. Then the elites came from Europe to America to make profit of the land that was there, in hopes to further them as a colony and led to them becoming plantation owners.

The development of slavery in the southern colonies contributed to the economic structure of the south by providing cheap labor resulting in large profit for the slave owners. These plantations were huge at this time due to the availability of practically free labor, the fertile soil, and the long growing seasons.
ReplyDeleteSocially, slavery allowed European settlers to be spread out all across the southern region because of their ability to run huge plantations located miles away from any other settlers. Due to the huge success of the crop industry, the settlers main focus was set on their goods and not their social activity or their children's education or such things that allow social interactions.
Politically, the southern white men created legislative groups that could vote and make decisions based on the slavery and the crop profits for their region. Cities and towns were few and far between due to the working land.
The theory of mercantilism is that a mother country, or the original settling colony, buys raw materials from its branched off, smaller colonies for cheap, manufactures these goods into usable items such as clothes, and sells these goods right back to their branched off smaller colonies for good profit.
The main reason for the settlement of the Chesapeake region was the fertile soil for growing crops. The Europeans knew that wherever they could grow crops the fastest, the better their colony would be off. This is the reason that their tobacco farming became a huge part of their lives and why the Chesapeake region was successful.
As the European settlers first came over to the America's, they found themselves aligned with the natives through trade. The Europeans soon took advantage of the Natives by bombarding their land and growing their crops on the Native's territory. This did not sit well with the Natives and caused great conflicts, and later, warfare between the two.
Europeans traveled over to the Americas in search for a way to economically thrive and build a new way of life that was simple and easy to live on. That is just what they achieved by finding fertile growing grounds and a cash crop, tobacco, that flourishes year after year providing them with great profits and foundation for a new colony.

The development of slavery in the southern colonies contributed to the economics because slavery was the cheaper way to make money. Slaves were cheap, which lead slave owners to buying them. This lead to them saving money on buying a slave and making even more money on what the slave does for work. Since slaves were so cheap, slave owners would work them to death, literally, and then buy another slave because that was the cheaper way to go. Slavery also contributed to the social organization because since slaves were making so many goods the slave owners would need to go out and meet people to sell their goods to so they would make money. Another thing slavery also contributed to was the political organization because slavery became a huge part of southern history. Slavery had a big impact on history and it would be totally different if we still had it.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the buying of goods like raw materials for cheap and then selling them for more money to make a profit.
The reasons for settlement on the Chesapeake region is because it had a good amount of land and land meant money. Everyone wanted the Chesapeake region because they wanted land to plant crops. The relationships between the natives and the Europeans lead to many wars, because the Europeans wanted the land to themselves and kept wanting to expand their territory and the land. The natives didn't agree with this which lead to them starting wars.
Elites came from Europe to America because they wanted the land to make money, because land lead to making money because you could plant crops and sell them.

The colonist settle in the Chesapeake region to grow tobacco and cotton, but they found out that those crops didn't grow well in that region. They later found out that sugarcane grew more better in that region, and so they all started to grow sugarcane. That lead to the colonists using the natives of that region as labor slaves which basically means that their relationship wasn't all that great. The elites motive for setting in that region for the 3 G's :god, gold, and glory.

Mercantilism is the buying of raw goods for a cheap price and making something out of it to sell back to make a profit. The main reasons for settling in Chesapeake was it's fertile land! Which was great for growing tobacco and cotton, however theu didn't quite get the profit they had expected. So, they then resorted to growing sugar cane and they benefited greatly from that! They had wanted a good relationship with the Native Americans however, the Europeans kept claiming the natives land (which the natives already established). From there their relationship went down hill. They turned the natives into slaves, which then allowed the economy to grow drastically. It was a cheap source of labor. The elites came to America in seek of land, economic opportunities, and to escape religious persecution. Basically the three G's, God, gold, and glory!

The idea of mercantilism is where the colony produces raw materials which then they sell to their mother country. In turn the mother country uses those goods to make other products and then sell those products at a really high price. You can see this happen when the colonists settle the Chesapeake region. The main goal of the settlement of Chesapeake was to grow tobacco and cotton, but soon realized that the region they were in could not support that, so they started to grow sugar cane instead. To grow things you need land, so the colonist just took the land around them. At first they were peaceful with the Natives, but as more and more colonist came they kept taking more and more land which ultimately led to conflict between the two people. The elites from Europe came to the Americas in search for new economic opportunities/ get rich. This caused them to start owning slaves. Owning a slave meant cheap labor and quicker profit. Having all these slaves in the South has shape their entire society which can still be seen today (sterotypes). Politically, the more land/ the more slaves you owned the more powerful you were because of how much money you had. This also applies with the social and economic aspect of the South.

Very well explained Ashley. I agree
DeleteThe theory of mercantilism is selling goods to your "owner"/mother and then buying it back in order for your mother country that is supporting you to benefit. On the other hand, reasons for settling in the Chesapeake region were to gain more land to farm, grow in strength, and help mother country. The English succeeded in doing so by experimenting on the land, and finding out that they could mass produce sugarcane there(economic benefit).
ReplyDeleteThe relationship with the natives was not good. In addition to all the expansion the Spanish tried to convert natives to Catholicism, and enlisted them to become soldiers/workers. With all the diseases there wasn't many natives left making the job easier, and adding to the anger of the natives towards the colonist.
Elites later came for high economic opportunities becoming plantation owners. America was built on slavery which is why the colonies prospered economically, etc.

I agree with the reason of the slavery contributing economically this mainly happened because there was a problem with the tobacco and cotton growth, so they found sugar and then thought it was a labor intensive crop, so that is why they used slaves. The thing that I don't agree with is that why wouldn't the slaves be treated with care if that is who helped them economically?, that is not fair at all.

The slave trade had a great impact on the economic, social, and political traits of the south and some could argue it's what constructed the nation especially in the south. With the slaves on the land in the south there was less need for common necessities as seen in the south such as education, but it also required things such as land and a lot of it to meet the needs set. This a common thing seen by the English settlers as they constantly try and get more land.
ReplyDeleteThis want for land has led to many conflicts with the native people who live in their regions. A great example of this was king Philips war, which erupted due to the European settlers aggressive conquest through native territories, and ended with the loss of 40% of the native population.
But let's not forget why the colonies were made it all comes down to the theory of mercantilism. This theory is used by European powers from 1500s-1800s to ensure constant exportation of finished goods and importation of raw materials from their colonies. This creates a dependency on the mother country who they are only allowed to trade with, although Britain didn't always enforce this upon the colonies they've established.
Speaking of colonies the Chesapeake region of colonies was home to many farmers, which is what the region was mostly used for thanks to the head-right system, which supplied settlers with 50 acres of land providing a good deal when immigrating to this region.
Although many who came to America were of the middle class there were also those who were elites. These elites came to the colonies to increase their gains by using the cheap lands to establish plantations which were massive in size allowing them to make great profit off of them.

I totally agree that slavery made a HUGE impact on what made the south successful. For the Europeans, there was no better way to produce goods for so cheap and it helped them to make bigger profits. Did it help them greatly? Yes. Is it justifiable? Never. But, slavery is a huge part of what made the south, the south. - Isaiah Ramirez 4th
DeleteSlaves were a large part of change in the south. Not only was it cheaper for Europeans but there was a lack of single women for young rich men to marry. This created a lack of farmhands so they turned to slave trade. Granted this did help production it is absolutely wrong to force anyone of any race to do extraneous labor.
DeleteMercantilism is the process of using the colonies to purchase cheap raw materials, manufacture them into goods, and sell them for a higher price. People moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, because there was fertile soil and great irrigation for their crops to flourish. However, the crops ruined the soil overtime and these small farmers had to sell their land to wealthier men who gained success from the early tobacco industry. These wealthy farmers bought land from multiple people and combined it to form plantations, so they could produce a larger amount of crops and make a larger profit. It took a lot of manual labor to tend and harvest these crops so the plantation owners turned to slavery. Economically, slavery had a positive effect on the colonies, because it was free labor aside from the initial purchase of the slaves and the farmers were making more money off the mass production of their crops. The treatment and torture of the slaves was morally wrong, but sadly the colonists were blinded by the amount of money they were making. Slavery had a negative effect on the south socially, because of the plantations the colonists never felt the need to create cities or even schools. In their minds, if you were making enough money growing crops you only needed to learn how to farm, and you didn't need to socialize with anyone besides your family and maybe your neighbors. Overall the development of plantions and the use of slave labor allowed the colonists to prosper in the new world and establish themselves, but it really negatively effected their society and didn't give them the drive to progress as humans.
ReplyDeleteThe creation of the plantation lifestyle really did plateau the southern colonies in many ways. There was no specialization, education, or labor diversity; everybody did what they already knew and had been doing for years--farming. This economic uniformity, although profitable, sort of stunted their growth.
DeleteMaddy, I agree with both you and Lauren. the plantation lifestyle impacted the southern colonies drastically. Very well put
DeleteThe development of slavery contributed economically, socially, and politically in the southern colonies, because at first the English settles experienced difficulties with cotton and tobacco, so they later found out that the most lucrative crop was sugar. Since, the discovery was made they began to grow a market in Europe, but this later became difficult because sugar was a labor intensive crop, so the English decided to import labors. They got the African Americans and made them slaves, and they used them to grow and be the sugar planters. They did not really care for them and they preferred getting new ones once the other dies. The slaves helped grow the economy, because they made the sugar industry successful and the Europeans benefited from the market by making money. The theory of mercantilism was during the 16th and 18th century based on England establishing the colonies to provide raw materials to the Mother Country, and then the colonies received the manufactured goods in return. In Chesapeake the reason for settlement was the sugar, because in the region they began by bringing indentured servants from England and they would work to produce sugar and that helped the economy and the market grow. The relations with the Natives were not very good the Natives fought against them, because the land was stolen, and the Natives did not agree. The Elites came for economic reasons they just wanted the money and they used the slaves they bought to grow the sugar for them.

Yes, I agree on the theory of mercantilism but it was also so that the mother country could get a economic profit in order to support the "colony/colonies".

DeleteMercantalism is a system of purchasing goods for cheap and selling them at a higher rate in order to make a profit. The Chesapeake area was used for mainly growing sugarcane and other agricultural reasons. The relationship with the natives wasnt the best because they weren't too happy about their land being stolen from them. Slavery largely contributed to the development of the distinct society norms in southern colonies. Probably the most influential factor in the growth of reliance on slave labor within the colonies was mercantilism. Because of mercantilism, in which the mother country grows rich and prosperous at the expense of their settled territories, the colonies' trade and economic niches were strictly regulated. The Chesapeake region was settled for this exact purpose, to grow crops and provide raw materials to feed the needs and manufacturing in England. With sugarcane prospering in the Caribbean islands, labor was needed much quicker and cheaper in order to produce more crop for England and earn more money for plantation owners. Indentured servants no longer fit the bill for the money hungry European elites. Slaves would be more profitable for these elite settlers focused on gaining wealth. Their eyes set on the prize, Europeans became harsh land owners, working their slaves to death in the pursuit of success. The plantation economy was born out of these practices. For the Native Americans, these changes affected them in various ways depending on their location and with whom they interacted. While some Europeans were able to establish a respectful and productive relationship with the natives, others used them for work or attempted to integrate them into their culture by forcing religion upon them. Native Americans were ultimately displaced and their population significantly decreased due to epidemics brought over with the growth of European expansion into the New World.

Mercantilism is the idea that you should produce and obtain raw materials so you could sell them for cheap to your mother country. Their mother country would in turn, use those raw materials to sell for higher prices and make a good profit. The Chesapeake area was particularly good because although all crops did not succeed there, one very rewarding crop did, sugar. Sugar was a very popular item in their day, and it came with a good profit. Sugar was mainly for the rich and elite people, so if they could produce it fast and cheap, then there was plenty of room to make a good profit. The elites that moved to the new world did not make good relations with the natives already there. They came out of no where and took their land, not even giving a thought to the Native American tribes. They took their land and used it for their home, for their crops and various other things. These elites came to the new world to receive the three G's that everyone from their time was looking for. They were mostly middle class men and they wanted to become more than that. These middle class men moved to the new world to gain Gold (riches) , to gain Glory (fame) , and for God (to spread their religion). They were not the nicest people to work with, they used indentured servants a lot but they also started to depend heavily on African slaves who were not treated very well. - Isaiah Ramirez 4th
ReplyDeleteI agree with every thing you said, and I like how you mentioned the Indians not being treated right.
DeleteI agree with you! I like how you also pointed out how the significance of sugar crops contributed to the colonists decison in settling in Chesapeake.
DeleteMercantilism is a process where the colonies sell raw goods to the mother country, the goods are then turned into other products and the new products are sold to the colonies for a higher price. Therefore, the mother country gets the profit.
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans were at first looking for a place where they could grow tobacco and cotton because they believed they could make a profit off of it. But then they came the realized that the soil was not good for those kind of crops so they started to grow sugarcane. They then brought over African American slaves to grow the sugarcane for them. It was a great success for the colonies, sugarcane was not only produced sugar but also rum which was very popular oversees.
The Natives and the Colonist did not have a very good relationship. The Colonist came to the New World and took over all the land that the Natives had already claimed and once they realize how good the sugarcane grew they continued to take more and more from the Natives. They also tried to convert the Natives to Catholicism. The colonies had forced the Native Americans into labor by making them be farmers or soldiers. And the make things even worse, they somehow bought disease to the New World which in the long run ended up killing a ton of Natives. For these reasons and many more the Natives hated the Colonist.
Elites came to America because of all the good things they had heard about. They wanted money, escape for religious persecution and of course to be able to say that they were able to make it all happen! God, Glory and Gold!

ReplyDeleteSlavery in the south affected many different aspects of the lives of people there. It, sadly, helped the colonies in economic, social, and political ways. Because of slavery, a colonial government was put in place so that there would be no need to worry about slavery dying out. The free labor of slaves allowed for there to be economic systems put into place and because slavery had become such a huge part of the southern societies, the needs of slavery became a sort of mold for how those societies would be shaped.
The Chesapeake region was chosen to be settled mainly because more land was needed for farming as well as because it was in part of the bay which granted them protection from attacks. This location would allow them to ship any goods they needed to as well as to build docks.
Mercantilism is the idea that your wealth is dependent on others and that it is finite. Because of this, you have to build up your own reserves by exporting things for more after you import them at a lesser price and after they have been manufactured. Many colonies were forced to trade because of this belief.
The relationships that were made with the natives were not consistent ones. At first the natives welcomed the settlers in with open arms and were open to learning to do certain things the ways they did and vice versa. As more and more settlers went to the New World, though, they became less open to learning the ways of the natives and soon the natives were cast away even though they helped the settlers survive the beginning years of colonization. The Spanish even tried converting the natives. The natives then became slaves in plantations in the South. The elites came to the south in america because of those plantations and the economic benefits they offered, and they ended up owning them.
I like how you mentioned that the Natives were first welcoming to the settlers because many people forget that at one point the Natives were happy to learn new things and to teach things that they knew. Most people just remember the part where the settlers turned to ignoring the Natives and treating them like slaves instead of people who helped them learn many new things about the land.
Deletemercantilism is trading and selling goods to get a profit. The Chesapeake region has very fertile soil, therefore a lot of people wanted to settle there to plant cash crops. Also they wanted to be close to the slave trade area to get slaves to make more crops. The natives did not like the Europeans because the all the land was being taken over by them. Their homes are being taken over by europeans. If I was a native, i would be pissed too. The landowners were mostly slave owners. they had poorly treated slaves that would die by the age of 40. Slavery was big to have crops here.
ReplyDeleteThe development of slavery contributed to the economic, social, and political organizations of the southern colonies by importing labors to help with the production of goods and services. Which those labors so happen to be African Americans. After participating in the event of slavery the products and good became much more successful. So therefor the Europeans only benefited from the process and made the money they wanted. Now the theory of mercantilism had a great role to play in this process which was providing raw materials to the Mother country, and then in return the colonies received the manufacture goods. In Chesapeake the reason for settlement was one of the manufactured goods, sugar. They would import indentured servants from England and they would produce the sugar for them. That was a reason that helped the economy and the market grow. Now the Elites only transferred to the Americas from Europe for economic reasons, they just wanted to gain money by using the slaves they brought to grow and produce the sugar for them. Lastly the relationships between the Natives weren't so bright because the Natives decided to fight against them because the land was stolen and the Natives disagreed with that totally.
ReplyDelete-Abigail Gamez 6th period
The development of slavery is seen as a terrible thing now but it had a great impact on the economical, social and political decisions that were made during that time in the southern colonies. Having slaves made the labor so much easier since they had people to do the hard work which in turn made them more money since they did not have to pay anyone for the labor. Mercantilism is buying goods for a low price, making them slightly better or making them into something new and selling them for a price that is much higher than what was it was originally bought for. The Chesapeake region was settled because the land was cheap and the soil was great for growing sugar cane. The relationship they had with the Native Americans was terrible. Once the Europeans landed, the Native Americans had little to no chance of surviving all the diseases and epidemics that came along with the Europeans and the ones who did survive were worked to death. The elites came to the Americas mainly to get as much land and money as they could, many of them became plantation owners.

The French, Spanish, and English wanted to make the most of the New World to fill up their treasuries, but (mainly the English) often neglected the settlers of the colonies and their best interests to do so. Mercantilism, for all three mother countries, was about asserting economic and political dominance, and were willing to resort to anything in order to acquire that power. However, first was getting the land. Since Jamestown was the first successful settlement, many new immigrants settled around Virginia, and expanded north and south, one reason why immigrants settled around the Chesapeake region. Colonists who settled up north had no luck with agriculture, due to dry terrain, and relied on animal trapping/fur trading, while colonists who settled south found lots of success in agriculture. Thus, the second reason for wanting to settle the Chesapeake region was for the rich fertilization around the body(ies) of water. Furthermore, when there's agriculture, there's labor. So, the South began using enslaved Natives and bought (usually forced to, but were reluctant) slaves to accommodate for the intense work that came from agriculture. This in turn created a class system. For instance, the social/economic/political structured resembled that of England, with aristocrats at the top, slaves at the bottom. This brought conflict with the Natives, usually through rebellion and battles. However, this was not seen often in the North. Although the Southerners wanted to have stable trading relations with the Natives, their interest for agricultural profits blinded elites from Europe. The French and some Spanish were able to maintain stable relations with the natives using the fur trade, but were not as economically successful as the English. However, there were no rebellions and no strong tensions. Even though there were many differences in finding that profitable hold, elites came to the New World for one thing, mainly- Profit. Those who could become economically powerful quickly could assert their desires quickly. That is why buildings such as churches, schools, and other gathering places are scarcely seen in the South than in the North- people in the South only wanted money, which later created many incentives to support the Atlantic Slave Trade and wars afterward.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have to say Mr. Tamtam. And I liked your inclusion of the French as they played a big role. Also not starting off your response with "The theory of mercantilism" like most others was a nice touch.
DeleteI mostly agree with what you said, Thong. However, it was mainly the Spanish that were gung-ho about the "God, Gold, Glory". Every did want the gain/spread those three incentives, but the main incentive was Gold. We also have to remember that the Natives knew nothing about "disease", which posed more of as a sign that "European's religion is better than ours" sort of thing. But yeah, great work explaining why the Chesapeake region was so important!
ReplyDeleteSadly, the development of slavery played a very impactful role in the southern colonies on their economic, social and political organization. English colonists in the Caribbean area began planting sugarcane (A very in demand product of the time), and since it was a very labor heavy crop, they ended up using slaves to harvest them, leading the colonists to gain big profits off of sugarcane and the economy boom. And because of the harsh treatment towards slaves, the islands weren't exactly a family -friendly place, so most of the wealthy Englishmen left their estates in the hands of overseers, however the slaves did begin building their own culture and society amongst themselves, sustaining african religious and cultural traditions. The treatment of the natives wasn't much better, if they didn't die off naturally due to the diseases we brought over or forcefully get relocated to somewhere else, we either killed them or made them forcefully work for us. Mercantilism is the process of selling raw resources from colonies to the mother country and buying commodities only from the mother country. There was a way to make a profit in Virginia through the cultivation of Tobacco, combine that with religious freedom and that is why most colonists settled in the Chesapeake region. Soon the elites from Europe came to America to make a profit by growing and selling crops such as Tobacco through slave labor.

Slavery was brought to the Southern colonies to increase the profit that they receive from shipping goods, as you yield a bigger margin from not having to pay your workers. Mercantilism relied completely on profits to succeed. The economy relied on slavery. Soon, slavery was entrenched in every colony. In some areas, African slaves made up the majority of the population and intermingled with whites. Such as where slavery was used to harvest sugarcane in the harsh conditions of the Chesapeake area, the demand for sugar was high worldwide and this didn't aid in the conditions that the slaves worked in. The treatment of the native people varied upon which European country that they encountered. The Spanish forced them to convert to Catholicism and enlisted them into their empire, while the English did the same. They sometimes acted a interlopers in between tribes. The elite in the colonies were already the upper class in the old world, but they came to the Americas for the opportunities of increasing their wealth. They invested in huge plots of land and were soon plantation farmers with large collections of slaves, tobbaco and money.

ReplyDeleteIn 1607 English colonists sailed into the Chesapeake in search new lands and riches and built up what would eventually become Jamestown. They chose this inland location because they believed it provided protection from the Native Americans, whom they thought to be savages. However this swampy area actually made them more vulnerable to the Indians. Despite the tensions with the Native Americans, colonists were also juggling survival and learning new agricultural techniques. They also developed a new idea called mercantilism. The point of mercantilism was to only trade with the homeland, England to prevent the British government from uprising economic competition. This however wasn't successful because farmers and traders grew aggravated with trying to maintain self-determination. This caused lots of conflict with British trading laws and regulations, and let colonists down a long road of rebellion. The development of slavery also was a major key in contribution to economic and politcal development of the new government, evern though it was disgusting. It created tension between uncivilized people, grew the production and prices of farmer's goods and also changed history forever. Slavery created opportunities for the settlers and colonists agriculturally and created unequality to those enslaved.
Mercantilism was an economic practice that was common in Europe in during the 16th to the 18th century. Mercantilism is basically where you buy something and then sell it for more expensive in order to make a profit. The Chesapeake region settled mainly because there was more land to ship goods back and forth and to grow more crops for agricultural use. Although there were a few problems when running a "Business", which is what they were basically doing; there are always minor set backs. They had a fairly decent relationship with the natives to begin with but, through time their decent relationship didn't stay very peaceful. Soon they decided to start owning slaves because, the more work they did the less they had to do. The development of slaves made a major impact on how their economy was run.

The lack poor relationship with the natives was largely due to the English attempting to profit off of them, french trying to convert them, so on and so forth.
DeleteMercantilism is an economic idea in which colonies sell their resources to their mother country for cheap, and the mother country trades the finished products back to the colonies at a higher price.
ReplyDeleteThe English began settling the Chesapeake region because the Spanish, its owner, were busy fighting elsewhere, and the English were trying to spread their influence and find more farm land, in this case for sugar cane.
Native Americans in the area were nearly wiped out because of the diseases the Europeans brought with them to the New World.
Elites came to the Americas because of all the farm land they were granted, and because of the extremely cheap slave labor that was utilized there. However, due to the low life expectancy, they would usually return to England with their sugar plantations in the hands of other who would take care of it for them.
Slaves helped economically because the English were able to become richer due to their low labor cost. They helped politically because the distinction was soon created between white landowners with power and African slaves with none. Finally, they helped socially because they created the only real culture (with their African roots) in the Caribbean area.
The Chesapeake was colonized for the same reasons as almost every other civilization, agriculture and economy. The Europeans wanted mass sugar cane, or any agriculture that could grow in that area , production which of course lead to slavery because using the natives is free and cheap labor. Mercantilism relates to this due to the fact that production was key for success in the colonies and mercantilism is benefiting from the profits.
ReplyDeleteThe southern colonies were molded by and founded upon slave labour, and the colonial government was put into place to ensure slavery's pressence.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was an economic system system put into place by a mother country upon its colonies to make said country lots of money; the colonies would produce mass amounts of unrefined product and sell it to the mother country for dirt cheap, and then the mother country would turn around and sell the product back to the colonies, more refined and at a higher price.
The Chesapeake region was settled more or less entirely due to the large demand for land of which to farm to make more money, to buy more luxorious items in the kings manor.
The relationship with the natives was wishy washy, with the English discombobulating the natives, the Spanish converting the natives, and the French often joining the natives.
The elites came to the Americas seeking many things, mostly money. English businessmen dreampt of wealth, while many protestant religious groups revered freedom. The Spanish and french wanted what they've always wanted, as per usual, the classic god, gold glory trio (french weren't huge on the god part).

ReplyDeleteWhat were they defending from again? Was it the Spanish? Was it the natives?
DeleteMercantilism is an economic system put in place by a mother country on their colony to restrict their trade to only the mother country so the mother country makes a lot of profit. The colonists settled the Chesapeake bay area because they needed more farmland, and Chesapeake was large and fertile. They grew tobacco and sugar there, providing crops to shove back to the mercantilism machine. Natives in this area and others were unfortunately treated poorly, as the colonists shoved them off their land, killed them, enslaved them, and unfairly traded with them so as to make more money off of them and the land. Rich elites came to the new world for a couple reasons, one to practice religion freely, another to make money and gain power, and one more reason may have been to get away from the crown and start over. Slavery influenced America heavily, providing a base for our economy, infrastructure, society and classes. Slaves made all-new social classes(mullattos, creoles, ext.), new forms of music(jazz), and provided the human labor base to create our infrastructure and economy by farming and slave trade. Slaves also created much of the South's population, as there were a lot more slaves then there ever were whites.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the idea of buying raw goods for cheap then turning them into finished products and reselling them for higher prices. The Chesapeake region is the prime region for the English because the Spanish were distracted fighting another war. This made it easy to take over the land and making it an ideal place for sugar farming. The Native Americans and the English really did not get along very well. The english used them to get foods and other goods, also the English then began taking the Native American land. The English saw everything as theirs because they “founded” this new land. Slowly more and more elite english men came to the new lands, they became farm owners which soon due to the lack of single women would turn into plantations. Plantations can as a result of the English men turning to slave turn, this way they would have people to take care of crops as well as livestocks.
