Today we continued to examine the founding of the original colonies. Who started them? Why did they bother to do so? How did they make their money? these were just a few of the questions we took a look at. We implemented a 1- 3 - 6 protocol to make sure the vast amount of information was shared with everyone. Below is the graphic organizer we used. If you were absent, you can fill in the chart from the web, or you should feel free to drop by my tutorials (3:30 - 4:00) to get time with the books.

mercantilism was a economic practice from the 16th to the 18th century, it promoted regulation of a nation's economy. the main reason settlement in the Chesapeake are was better rights for economy, socially, and politics. when the first colonists came to the new world their relationship with the native Indians was different depending on the leader and the area where they lived, fo rmost of the areas it was trade and treatitys, but then of course there was the certain areas where Indians where put to work as slaves and killed. in the new world land was cheeper and gave the oppertuinty to become more powerful, meaning that whoever owned land became the ideas of the suppierors in Europe.
ReplyDeleteThat was true about back then having more land would mean you had more power and wealth, but how long do you think that lasted. Because if everyone coming to the new world could get land that the worth of land and the power it mint you had would have dropped greatly.
Deletebut if you realized once the new world had become more sutible to the new comers than the most powerful in England would come over and take over once again, basically having the same issues and all that just on different soil. I do agree with you on how the price of land would decrease, and it did once the soil became not useable due to the over use.
DeleteBut think about the abundance of land that they discovered as they came over. Surely they didn't overuse all of the americas.
Deletebut surely people wouldn't just venture out into the unknown just yet, it must of taken a long time to not only travel to new land but also get settled in a new land.
DeleteI agree, with being so new to the land don't you think people would settle before they venture out into the unknown and out of their safe zone
Deletein the late 16th to the early 18th century, mercantilism was the major oppurtintys for people to do better in life and for the government to stabilize and become more equal. when people came from Europe to setle in the chesapeke area the rights for many things including economy and politics became possible, mainly because land was cheaper and gave the opprtuinty to become more powerful. unforcently some natice Indians became slaves while others worked closly with the settlers and help them survive while the settlers traded with them.
ReplyDeleteYou got to know that most slaves died because Europeans brought diseases. And I agree with the settlement of Chesapeake and why they settled there. Good Job.
DeleteI Agree about cheaseapeak being thoroughly succesfull, it was a used for trade and had a large amount of clean water. Also, the soil was fertile enough to supply self sufficient agriculture, that was until they introduced the cash crop of tobacco.

DeleteMercantilism is creating a colony some where that is dependent on the home country, by doing this the colony is force to trade with the home country. What usually happens is the home country buys raw materials form the colony and creates it into clothing at a cheap price, then selling it bak to the colony at a higher price then what it was made. By doing this the home country gets new raw materials and makes money off there colonies.
ReplyDeleteBut it usually dozen't work and the colonies will want to trade with other countries that have lower prices.
The reasons for taking the chesapeake region would be for many reasons, people looking for religious freedom, new land to grow crops like sugar and tabaco, or claim new land and using mercantilism on the people of that land.
Relationships between the natives and european can very from driving them off there land, or being nice at first and trading with then to then driving them of there land. Earthier way the europeans where not the kindest people to the natives, usually they where driven off there land and would die of decease brought over by the europeans.
Elites from europe would come over the the americas with others that they would pay to bring over and in return they would work of the elite on a plantation or farm to pay the elites back for there passage.
You got all the info, but that grammar tho... "The reasons for taking the chesapeake region would be for many reasons" 1st sentence, 3rd paragraph, you should use 'vary' instead of 'very,' last paragraph, just say 'indentured servants' instead of 'come over with others they would bring over.'
DeleteThe natives were also turned into slaves by the Europeans

DeleteGreat job
Deletewell if you were not white you were turned into a slave basically.
DeleteYes, but what about in later years when they find out that mercantilism kinda sucks for everyone, that their crops, such as tobacco, would never be as profitable as they had planned, and that having land doesn't necessarily grant you passage to an aristocratic lifestyle. The people may have better lives than they did before, but it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Other than that nice job:)!
DeleteMercantilism is the basis for economies and colonial success. The idea being that in order for the settlement to thrive there must be a constant exchange of goods and services. The settlement of the Chesapeake region were for the pursuit of economic opportunities, wealth, religious freedom, and it was the first site of permanent settlements. The relations of the Anglosaxons, spanish, and other settlers with the native americans varied on the area and the people. Some traded with the indians, while others were hostile, some enslaved the indians, a lot died off due to the diseases brought with the settlers. The elites that came from Europe sought after wealth and the vast amounts of land available, along with the many opportunities for free labor. They used the land they claimed for agriculture like plantations and farms which their slaves or the men they payed their way for to operate the plantations.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was big back in the 16-18th century it is what the colonists depended on. Slaves will access raw materials because they were paid at a cheap price. Colonists would then trade the raw materials with England and then buy what ever they made with it at a high price. And whenever the colonists found out it was working, they would trade whatever they bought to other countries. There are many reasons why lots of people settled in the Chesapeake region, first they could acquire lots of land and grow crops, while the slaves were doing all the work. Whatever they got out of it they would then trade with other countries to make profit.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between Indians and Europeans was not good. Indians were pushed away from their land or they would die from diseases brought by Europeans.
Elites came over because they wanted to acquire land to make a plantation, they would also bring other people who would want to come. In return for paying for their trip they would then work on the plantation for the elites.
I noticed you said, "Slaves will access raw materials because they were paid at a cheap price." If they were slaves they were not paid at all. They were "owned".
DeleteI agree with Madeline slaves weren't paid enough to even live. Slaves didn't have any freedom they were always afraid to do anything because of the harm put on them by their "owners".
DeleteI'd hate to sound like a broken record, but they have a point. Slaves were seen as an equivalent to livestock, so they were forced to work with no empathy.
DeleteAwesome!!!!!!
DeleteMercantilism was an economic system that allowed empires to profit from their colonies. It worked by having the empire import raw materials and sell finished goods to the colony, and keeping all the wealth flowing into the empire. As for why Chesapeake bay was settled, is because some people wanted to be free from the religions enforced in europe, while others wanted land so they could move up on the social ladder. The relations the colonists had with indians weren't all that civil, as the colonists forced them off of their land and gave them diseases they had no immunity to. People with higher status from europe came to america because they wanted to expand their wealth and knew that there was lots of land available that they could use to further uphold their status.
ReplyDeleteWe gave the natives diseases that we did not consider to be harmful, as the English treated the diseases to be minor illnesses. Or did they know that the natives would be susceptible to these illnesses? What uncivil meanies.
DeleteThe colonists LOVED mercantilism. It was a way to provide the British with money at the expense of the colonists, who were having a hard enough time surviving as it was. In fact, in a nice twist of irony, mercantilism only raised smuggling in the colonies.
DeleteBy coming from Europe to the Americas and settling the Chesapeake region, Europeans were allowed social mobility and economic opportunity. This was derived through the practice of mercantilism and economic activitivities such as slave trade, agriculture, and plantations (which were operated through slaves) of elite Europeans.
ReplyDeleteSlavery also contributed to the relationship with the natives because natives were placed on the same social level as slaves. The colonists were peaceable with them after they understood them, but mostly they had a tense relationship.
I agree with you on how natives were treated like slaves ~nice vocab by the way~::)
DeleteI agree on how much the Indians were treated like slaves and you can see the likeness of slaves and Indians even by their economic activities.
DeleteI agree with everything you said, but not only did the natives becoming slaves affect the tension between the two, but also the fact that they lost their own lands to the newcomers.
DeleteI agree with all 3 of you, the natives were on the same social level as the slaves and were kicked of their own land.
DeleteSlavery contributed to economic success by continuing cheap labor so that merchantilism could flow by having more raw materials so England could successfully make products. Slavery also created a division between social classes since Europeans came to America to be higher in class and be able to own land the Europeans were able to control slaves and eventually work them to death. like the slaves the natives were also sometimes forced into labor for agriculture from the Europeans and forced to convert religion. In the Chesapeake region it was based on slavery and tobacco and many people moved there to become rich. Slavery also influenced politics in southern colonies because there were slave revolts and it was an issue that the English government didn't really handle so the Europeans handled it and it ended in harsh conditions for slaves.
ReplyDelete(Period:3)
i think this is a good summary!
DeleteHow you compare the relations of natives and colonist to slavery is really smart
DeleteMercantilism was the process of trading, but making a profit at the same time. Slavery was beneficial for the people of the southern colonies because self sufficient farmers were able to keep up with with personal finances. They didn't have to pay any of the slaves for working. That is why people wanted to leave Britain and were drawn to the Chesapeake region, because the soil was rich and perfect for farming and losing money would be non existent. The colonist stole and took ideas and traded with Native Americans in order to live there and soon they used the natives land to make the booming cash crop for tobacco.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism was the basis of colonial life in the 16th-18th century. This allowed colonies to exercise control over the trade of the colonies, greatly affecting their political and economical development. People picked the Chesapeake region for its promising soil for farming and in search of becoming rich and freedoms such as religious and political. These colonists relationships with Native Americans were poor. The Native Americans got pushed off their land and mistreated by the incoming British. Elites came to the Americas in search of becoming even richer. Slaves brought in to the colonies were vital to the English's success. They were free labor that produced a lot of goods, in turn creating a high income for their owners.
ReplyDeleteAlot of great facts kolbs ! This summary is my favorite :)
DeleteMercantilism is a economic theory that suggest that trading generates wealth. Nations usually put down laws on their colonies (Great Britain on The new world) to get the most economically out of them. Slavery was the economic basis for the souther colonies by allowing farmers to own them for a small price and making a profit on crops they (the slaves) grew. Colonist settled in the Chesapeake region because it offered an abundance of land that could be easily used to farm and own slaves
ReplyDeleteWas mercantilism really only a theory? Other than that good post!
DeleteI'm not saying it didn't work I'm saying its an idea here's a definition of theory "a set of principles on which the practice of an activity is based."
DeleteMercantilism was economic theory that was practiced in the 16th to 18th century and it was to promote government regulation of the colonies money. It was a constant flow by importing raw materials and selling finished goods to surrounding colonies. Slavery contributed to economic thrive by the people paying slaves so little for their hard labor. Also, elite europeans came to the Americas to be able to own their own land to grow crops like sugar and tobacco. Tobacco was a big boom for these colonist so eventually everyone started using slaves and the natives to work their tobacco farms, and they made a good amount of money. Slaves were basically pushed to do someones dirty work till departure. However, natives treatment could be the same or amicable depending on the colonist. The settlement of the Chesapeake region was for people to have land and be free to practice their own religion.
ReplyDeleteMerchantelism was a theory that promoted regulation of an economy. The theory promoted that a nation should export more than they import. Chesapeake settlement was due to the desire of more/better land. It had rich soil which would increase crop growth and more land and crops meant more money. Relationships with the natives depended on the area and person. Many were treated inhumanly, had their land taken away from them, and basically used as slaves while others helped the colonists with their crops and produced new, unheard of ideas to the colonists. Elites came for two reasons; wealth and land. On all of the land they gained, the built plantations which only increased their income and increased the population of slaves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how they were treated as if they were not humans and had them do the work for them when they were doing it just fine on their own and basically take the Natives land and everything they had.
DeleteI like how you explained the reason for the elites coming over to the new world it made me realize that they came over more for the benefit of themselves rather than others
DeleteBasically everyone who came over to the new world went for themselves, not just the elites.
DeleteIt was thought that a nation should be careful with the way that they trade. They should sell more than they buy. This theory, called mercantilism, would help to create a balance for their money. Europeans moved toward the Chesapeake area in search for new land, and religious freedom. After finding what they were looking for, they created settlements, and started farming. With farming comes an increase in the need for labor workers. The natives had already gotten their land taken away from them, and now were forced to work as slaves. This was not the case for all natives, though. Some were used as helpers to the colonists. Elites came from Europe to the Americas in search for a place to build plantations

ReplyDeleteIn the 16th to 18th century, mercantilism was a great opportunity for those who needed a better way of dealing with life. On the other hand when the Europeans came over to the Chesapeke , they brought over diseases which effected the natives. That always put a little effect on the Europeans because they owned some of the natives as slaves. Although they bought slaves for a low price, if there slaves died they just lost money and they came over to this new world to make money. The Europeans came over searching for better land to grow more of there crops, and the more of crops the more money. They came over to express their wealth and spread / practice their religion. The Europeans would convert their slaves into their religion. They would work slaves basically to death. The slaves would though produce many goods for a cheap price and bring happiness to their owners.
ReplyDeleteSlavery was an ends for the elites to obtain wealth and prosperity at a cheap price. They gained money by doing mercantelism which is the theory of trading for a profit. They came to Chesapeake because it was abundant in soil and was easily to obtain. They believed that since they were white they could own what they wanted. The natives were treated very poorly and inhumane and were unfairly kicked out of their home.
ReplyDeletei agree with that the native were treated very poorly and soon later got kicked out of there land, but the native should keep there land because they were the one to inhabit it first and know how to survive in that land.
DeleteI agree with both of you the Natives were treated unfairly and unconsiderately.
DeleteMercantilism is the belief in trading for profit, which was big between the 16th through 18th century where nations would export goods in order to recieve imports and profits that would help them grow both economically and politically. This was one of the main reasons that colonists movec cheapsake where they could better themselves by boosting their social status, get bigger pieces of land for their families, and to have religious freedom. When the colonists first came they were met with mixed reactions from the natives. One example being Virginia and new England who asserted their dominance in the region by takimg over and displacing natives out of their homes and establishing societies made up of mostly english.while along the west border colonies they learned to co exist with the natives and even make "concessions" with the natives. As for the elites they came from Europe to gain both more land and become wealthier by growing sugar and tobacco. Of course this was hard enough to do on their own so first they used servants, then debtors and workers, then finally switching to slaves who would become part of the economy itself since they were sold for cheap labor and more hands meant more profit for their master.
ReplyDeleteThe development of slavery in the southern states played a critical role in the economic system. This occurred because of how much labor was needed to be bring in the dough' -- dough' being tobacco and other crops which was sold to Europe. However, this led to a large number of problems. In one instance, colonists went on a huge rush to grow tobacco because of how profitable it was. Tobacco takes a lot out of the land, and mass plantations would cause a need for more land. Furthermore, the relationship with natives caused conflicts, as the land the plantations wanted were inhabited by them. In another instance, the mass production of tobacco caused an inflation in the England market for tobacco. Which led some colonists to realize how messed up the choke hold of England's mercantilism system is. The settlements could only sell their natural resources to England. They also could not construct their own manufactures without the consent of the British. This trade system would only benefit the British, and none of the colonists over at the Americas. This also set stone of how plantation owners became exceedingly rich and would cause issues for others to start plantations. Plantation farms is how tobacco is mass produced. In order to get land, you would have to have money; money that the British elites easily had. This idea of restriction siphoned an ideal of freedom because of how the region they grew crops in was for religious freedom, and more land to use for growing crops. Crops led to money, only that they can only trade with the British. This unfairness led to future tensions and helped develop the new forming country.
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting to see how a single crop could affect history so significantly!! Moreover, it is for the first time when different people live and connect with each other for same goal. Also, mercantilism affects colonization significantly. As we see more demand on tobacco over in home-nations, we see more and more people settling here for befitting themselves through demand. Therefore, I believe that even if mercantilism sounds like a BAD IDEA today, it actually had some positive effects on history.

DeleteMercantilism is a 16th to 18th century economic theory which states that a nation's economy depends upon the raw materials it gets from its colonies for production of finished products. Mercantilism policy believes that a nation should have as much exports it can to other nations and as least imports it can from others. Moreover, colonies were forbidden to trade their raw-materials to other nations. Also, the behavior by home-country to its colony was of neglect and self-centered outlook.
ReplyDeleteThe primary and initial reason for the settlement in the Chesapeake region was the lust for gold and other natural resources.
At the beginning the Europeans had to learn from Indians about farming as well as basic survival skills to live in New World. After, knowing the region well and with supplies as well as more settlers coming in, the Europeans started to have tensions with Indians and they started intruding Indian Lands for more resources.
To encourage more people to settle in New World, the European Nations started introducing 'Head right' system where every settler(planter at the start of this tradition) would get 50 acres of land.Grabbing on to this opportunity, the elites started moving to New World for land pursuits as well as important designations(if destiny allows)Gradually, as they started to dominate more lands and resources, we see the rise of aristocracy and emergence of slavery in the New World.

mercantilism is an economic theory that happen in the 16th to the 18th century also they depend on raw materials and goods. the reason they to Chesapeake was to provide security for the natives and the also came for the gold and other exports and they slow learn how to live on the new land from the natives. at first the relationship with the natives was friendly and the teach them how to grow crops but then later on some of the English started to enslave them. supplies and men and women came to the colonies from Europe also European bought slaves and the colonies and most people became slave owners.
ReplyDelete(This is my third attempt at publishing a post) durning the 16th-18th century in colonial America slaves played a huge role in the southern most colonies. One way slavery helped was economically, buying slaves helped boost it, but they also helped landowners, the more slaves you had the faster you could turn out your product, then the more land you could buy and then even more product you could turn out for a profit(mercantilism). Slavery also helped socially, back in Europe nobles were born into wealth and most others would work for them or sell to them, in North America slavery created a new class, the slaves were now at the bottom. Slavery also helped political, the wealthier land owners were the one who voted and decided within the colonies, and one way to become a wealthy land owner was through slaves, again the more you owned the faster you could turn out a product for a large profit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying about the classes due to the slaves of the wealthy. I think that without slaves you would not be considered part of the wealthy class, so the slaves did help socially.
DeleteWow that's really great James you're the shiznats
Deletekeep it up
Mercantilism was the groundwork for economies and the colonies success. Meaning for their economy to be successful there had to be a constant exchange of goods and services. The settlement of the Chesapeake region was for the pursuit of economic opportunities, wealth, and religious freedom. It was the first site of permanent settlements. The relationship of the Anglosaxons, spanish, and other settlers with the native americans differed within each area and within the people. Most traded with the indians. Although some were more vicious; some even enslaved the indians. Many of the indians died due to the diseases, like small pox, brought with the settlers.
The elites that came from Europe came in search for wealth and the large amounts of available land. Moving also gave them in increase in free labor. They used their land for plantations and farms. Slaves, or even men trying to pay their way, would be working for the plantation master.
Although many later on moved because of free labor, there were no slaves at first. They came with indentured servants, which were cheap labor, but still not free. Many European elites were already in the Americas by the time slaves arrived.

The elites came because they wanted to get more land and become wealthier by growing sugar and tobacco, eventually they became salve owners and started to take control over the slaves and have them do thr work for them.
ReplyDeleteThis was good, they also moved to Chesapeake for religious freedom😊
DeleteMercantillism is economic nationalism for the purpose of building a wealthy and powerful society from the 16th to the 18th century. People settled in Chesapeake for religious freedom and land opportunities. English settlers imported slaves from England to cultivate, the cash crops, sugar and tobacco. The enslaving of people created social division. Many natives died from diseases brought by the Spanish settlers. The Spanish insisted to convert Indians to Catholicism. The Spanish also forced the remaining Natives to become agricultural workers to create a successful agricultural economy. The English encouraged the Indians to stand up against the Spanish Empire but at the same time the Spanish offered slaves, in the Carolinas, freedom if they agreed to convert to Catholicism. The Europeans displaced the Natives to establish their society. The Indians didn't fight for their land because they found European settlers menacing and frightening.

DeleteI think it's kind of weird how the europeans thought that the native americans were savages, when they were the ones who slaughter millions of inncent people.
Delete^i like how you brought this out. It goes along with the idea that Europeans were better than everyone else. This idea is shown through slavery and also the treatment of other races at that time.
DeleteI agree with your idea on Mercantilism and the relationship the Native Americans had with the settlers. Their were many various feelings between the two parties of people.
DeleteEuropeans always thought of themselves as the superior race they didn't really see the wrong in what they did, but rather what the Indians did. The idea of superior race as Georgia said was "shown through slavery and treatment of other races".

ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the economic practice used for the purpose of building a strong, powerful, and wealthy state. This mercantile system widely used during the 16th through 18th century's main purpose was to enrich the country by holding down on imports and encouraging exports. During the 16th and 17th century European nations greatly migrated to the newly discovered Americas. The reason that the Chesapeake region was so populated was because most people in that area were after religious freedom, great amounts of land, and economic opportunitys. But with migrating to the Americas, colonist had to also deal with native american indians. Colonist leaders either choose to use them as slaves, kill them, or make treaty's with them. Elites in look to going to the Americas were in search for much land and great wealth. Tho achieve their goals they created plantations that ran off slaves, which was considered free work labor during their time.
ReplyDeleteI like how you described how the colonists dealt with the natives since they take over their land or would use them as slaves for free labor. Another being about Mercantilism being important to the colonies.
DeleteThe natives were certainly treated unfairly during this time. Their land was taken and many died of diseases that were brought by the colonists. Some slaves were also brought over from Britain. I wonder if they were treated any differently by the landowners or by the natives?
DeleteMercantilism is the economic theory to having the perfect economy from the 16th century to the 18th century. As many know, most of the settlers around the Chesapeake Bay area had different views of the Natives: some only wanted to trade, while others wanted to dominate the land. Those that only wanted control usually got it by waging war with the natives. The Europeans used the remaining natives as slaves to engage cultivation. The reason these settlers came to Chesapeake Bay was for religious freedom, the vast amount of land, and economic opportunities. Elites looked to that region for land and wealth; to gain these things, they created plantations.
ReplyDeleteHurray for you, this isn't as redundant as most of these posts, says me.
DeleteThe English mostly imported African slaves to work in the canes, though it may have been true that they also used natives. There were also English men who wanted to have close relations with the natives by tagging along at their ceremonies and giving gifts, until it was old and they eventually stopped. Good work, says me.

DeleteNo economy is perfect. If they were just coming over for religious freedom, why did they settle in the Chesapeake Bay region? The natives were definitely enslaved but not by the English, I believe.
Mercantilism is an economic belief that became known for profitable trading the reason for the Chesapeake settlement was because the want to grow crops and the need for more land to do so the relationship with the Native Americans were very destructive with all the epidemics the old world brought over killed many of the Native Americans or on the other hand they were totally disregarded that they even live there because The newcomers would just take the land from them elites came to the New World by buying others passage so that they can come over also and in return they would work for the elites to pay them back
ReplyDeleteNot all the Native Americans were exactly disregarded, you can say that the majority were killed due to the spread of disease, and that most were used as slaves. On the other hand there were some Native Americans in where the Europeans actually made a sort of relationship with them. The Natives learned from the Europeans and the Europeans learned from the Natives. The Europeans even offered gifts to the Natives as a thanks for all the new things they learned.
DeleteMercantilism is the theory that a government should import more than it exports in order to profit from trade. Colonists settled in the Chesapeake region for many reasons, such as land, religious freedom, and economic opportunity. Some colonies were quick to dominate the native Americans, while others, like the French, worked at cultivating "successful relationships" with them. Elites came to the Americas to aquire more land, along with more power and wealth. The development of slavery contributed to the development of plantations, which was one of the largest parts of the economy, especially for the Southern colonies. It also created large social gaps that linger to this day.
ReplyDeleteYour idea of mercantilism is perfect. It makes perfect since because if you import more than you export then you receive more. Except i would say instead of just import more, the idea is importing more profit. Even though if you import more you still have more to export to different nations. So i agree with you because I would love to receive more that way I can export more.
DeleteVery nicely organized summary. I agree with your point that the development of slavery created large social gaps that exist even in today's society. It ties back nicely to the present time period and leaves us with something to think about.
DeleteMercantilism is an economic system in the 16th and 18th centuries that founded the belief to create a strong civilization from trading. There were many reasons for settlement in the Chesapeake region including the transformation of Indians to Christianity and larger opportunity for land. The relationship that settlers had with Native Americans can only be described as hostile because that's how earlier propaganda represented them as. Elites came over from Europe to America to become landowners for plantations.
ReplyDeleteBut in many colonies like Plymouth and Jamestown they would be friendly enough to trade with one another.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism was a way for empires to profit from trading. Mercantilism made empires grow and flourish in the 16th and 18th centuries. The chesapeake region was a region of fertile soil which made it ideal to farm crops on. The Chesapeake region also gave way to political powers and more econimic power as well. Most of the native americans were treated poorly and caught new diseases brought with new comers to the region. Elites came to the new world for power. They became rich land owners and on that land were the sites of many plantations.
ReplyDeleteThe Concept of mercantilism in the 16th through the 18th century is to increase a nations wealth by pushing government regularly concern of its commercial wealth. Trade is mercantilism's main purpose. In the beginning of the 17th century, European nations discovered that sugar was successful to grow and devoted most of the Chesapeake region land to sugar cane. Eventually this led to Rum (a prospering trade good). As Europeans colonized America, they brought along with them epidemics such as small pox and malaria. This caused most of the native population to be wiped out that had first inhabited the land. Elites came from Europe to America in order to create a prosperous agricultural society that led to the forcing and dependence of slaves and natives as laborers to increase the process. They used the settlements to produce wealth and colonized these regions of America in the south. Spanish outposts helped to create long lasting societies in southern colonies as colonialists from nations like France, Britain, and English filled them creating communities. Colonies were formed and economic advantages were rising as slavery was pushed and Africans and natives worked for settlers to produce growth of commerce in agriculture.
ReplyDeleteI agree except, didn't the elites come to America for more land and money? I just feel that you need to be more specific.
DeleteMercantilism in the 16th-18th century ensured that British government would remain powerful. The British government created a situation where the colonies were dependent on Britain for the raw material and also the outlet to sell their goods. By only allowing them to trade with Britain they were able to control all aspects of the economy.
ReplyDeleteThe Chesapeake colonies were settled for their fertile land and abundance of resources. The relationships with the natives depended on the attitude the leaders of the colonies. If the colonist were willing to trade with the natives they could usually count on their cooperation. In the end however, when the colonist wanted the land and the natives were displaced the relationship disintegrated. Many natives also died of the diseases that were brought into the Americas from Britain.
The elites came to the Americas hoping to gain great wealth by buying up lots of land and becoming rich and powerful in both places. They created great plantations that needed workers who were indebted to the land owner creating cheap labor and greater profits.
I really like how you pointed out about how the colonies were dependent on Britain for the raw materials. Also that the colonies were only able to trade with Britain so that Britain had control over all the aspects of the economy.
DeleteMercantilism was a way for the British to economically control further colonies by creating the Navigation Acts in which made sure all trade was made through the British ports. Chesapeake was a colony in which it contain more land, and more opportunities to experiment on planting new crops. These are reasons for why the Europeans arrived for more land and economic opportunities. After planting both tobacco and cotton (in which they failed), they soon found out that sugar was one of the most important crops, from this point on soon there would of been four times as many African Slaves as there were whites. The relationship was short between the Europeans and Indians since the Europeans spread disease which caused an epidemic wiping all Indians out, but in other occasions in the future some used the Indians as slaves and others tried to learn their ways since they couldn't just displace them. With the use of slavery, plantations were acquired which meant more need for land, but out of that most farmers got wealthy which is why the Elites came to the Americas. They also came to try and spread their way of life, their religion, and their power, which is what the Spanish obtained to do.
ReplyDeleteGreat summation of the reading. I liked how you described the relationship with the natives.
DeleteSlavery allowed slave owners to grow their estates with their increased profits widening the gap between rich and poor. With the amount of slavery in the south the racism towards African Americans to be one a social norm. With the rich class being predominantly slave owners they would pull their representative's strings to get what they want and keep slavery. Mercantilism is a system used by European nations to make profit off of their colonies by taking their resources and selling them finished products. Relations with native Americans differed from best buds to constant raiding it all depended on which colony you look at. The reason for settling the Chesapeake bay is they thought gold was there. They saw this as a chance to become wealthier and because the colony owners were their friends they gained huge amounts of land in the colonies.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't really describe the native americans and colonists as best buds however some did have a good relationship.Good Summary.

ReplyDeleteThe development of slavery was a huge contribute to the economies of the south colonies. Farmers survived by using the swampy areas in The Chesapeake Bay Area. Slaves were used for the help of agriculture with the large amounts of land that the farmers had. Slaves were treated as only property, and the slaves started rebelling; this lead to damaged crops, the population and buildings. People started taking sides because of the thought of unequal rights. The relationship with Native Americans were that they were friendly with them. The colonists traded with the Natives in order to help them survive on the new land. After the colonists no longer needed the aide of the Natives, their relationship turned bad. Elites came from Europe to the Americas as wealthy plantation owners, they needed land and wanted more money, so this separated them from the other classes who were not as fortunate. Mercantilism was central to the development and role of some British colonies.
ReplyDeleteYes good point this just seems that the rich are getting richer by treating people as if they were not human beings and just a thing.
DeleteWhat I understood and am attempting to put in words is that it's cheaper for English Elites to migrate to the Americas to grow and sell Sugar from the Cheap labor of African slaves. Their ties with the Natives were far less hostile than that of the slaves because the English really wanted to convert them and 'take their land' but would 'play at their parties' and gift the Natives until they could finally just shove them around. All is well until you're stabbed in the back for not accepting God.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is government regulated trade for economic gain. Since the government just wanted to make more money this makes it clear that the reason why they settled in Chesapeake bay was due to it good quality of land which was good for planting tobacco which is a major cash crop. Also the relationship with the Indians depended on what area you were in for example instead of trading with the natives some colonists captured Indians and made them their slaves. The reason why Europeans came to this new area was just for land with land you have the opportunity to make a lot of money and with money you can rise the social ladder. So the Americas was just a way to become rich with things such as cash rules more raw materials England needs.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of mercantilism was that it was a way that the British could become more profitable in trading economically when compared to other colonies. The Chesapeake area was good in one main reason; more land. More land meant many things, one of those things being more places to plant new crops. However, with the taking of the natives' land, some of the natives were forced into slave labor for the purpose of tending to the crops and other things. Elites came to America seeking new land and opportunities based on successful farmers. They got workers who were indebted to them that helped them have cheap labor.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is a 16th through 18th century concept that is based on one country living off of another countries raw materials and believing that you should export as much a possible with as least imports as possible. The chesepeake region was settled for economic opportunities, wealth and religious freedom. The relationship with the natives differed on who the leader was and how they decided to treat the natives and respect of their morals. Elites came to America for more land, therefore more money. This is where slaves came into effect. Slaves were cheap and allowed all of the income to go straight to the land owner.
ReplyDeleteThe expansion of slavery had a very broad and substantial effect on the developing southern colonies from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The idea of mercantilism basically arose from the idea that a nation only becomes rich at the expense of another. This made it very attractive to set up colonies in the New World for social elites as they saw it as a way to further expand their wealth as large landowners and plantations. With these many different settlers coming into the New World lots of plantations for mostly for tobacco, rice and sugar cropped up creating the need for labor. The growing slave trade (much cheaper and permanent than indentured servitude) helped these plantations to further produce crops for the economy and further infringe upon the Native Territory. This caused very strained relations between both parties. "These were communities in which Europeans had not yet established full control, in which Indians and Europeans exercised influence and power and lived together intimately, if often uneasily, with one another." Slavery refreshed the idea that the slaves were 'lesser' than the privileged white minority and were dehumanized in the social order. Natives were seen in much the same way (uncivilized savages). The reason Chesapeake Bay area was the ideal example of southern society because of its abundant resources, fertile soil for farming and a good opportunity to become wealthy.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was the theory that colonies in the new world exsited to benefit Britain. Slavery contributed to being able to make more raw materials so England could make more products. Slavery was benefical for the land owners because it was free, forced labor. Britain came to the Chesapeake area for the farm land, growing Tabaco. Realtionships with the natives were most of the time not civil. They had their land taken away and were used as slaves. Elites came to the Americas for land and for a fresh start in the new world.
ReplyDeleteYour reply is awesome, it has a bunch more info than mine, but i think Elites came mostly for the land to grow tobacco.
DeleteMercantilism was that British tax and restrict colonies, only buy/sell to Brits, so they can have lots of money.
ReplyDeleteReasons for settlement could be that it had lots of natural resources, trees, land, dirt, etc.
Beginning relationship w/Native Americans was one of tentative understanding and trade, then as more of the new world a was colonized, relations quickly turned sour. Brutally forcing the natives away.
Elites come for land to grow crops(tobacco) to make money to be rich.
Also because British make restrictions but don't enforce them, colonies turn to the black market(France) to sell their goods.
Delete-Theory of mercantilism:
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is like the economic version of totalitarianism. The government completely regulated the economy. High taxes or tariffs are part of mercantilism and is one of the biggest reasons for colonial expansion.
-Reasons for settlement of the Chesapeake region:
Searching for gold and other exports.
To spread their religion.
To take land for themselves.
-Relationship with Native Americans:
They slowly learned from the natives how to manage life in the new land; growing food, hunting and fishing, ect.
Driving natives away and claiming the land they lived on for themselves.
Why elites came from Europe to the Americas? became what sort of land owner?
Elites came to America to gain a lot of land to become even more rich and powerful than they already were, and also to influence the colonists that were moving into America. Elites also became plantation owners and utilized slaves to increase profits.
Mercantilism is a 16th to 18th century economic theory that says that a nations economy depends on the raw materials from its colonies. Mercantilism policy believes that you should have more exports then imports. To ensure this, the colonies weren't allowed to trade with other nations. The main reason for the settlement in the Chesapeake region was the search for gold and other natural resources. At first when the European's arrived they didn't know how to do basic essentials of living so they had to turn to the natives for help. Later on conflict arose because the European's didn't want to share with the indians anymore, and they wanted it all to themselves. The elites started moved to the New World for land opportunity with the new system of every new settler would get 50 acres of land. They started taking up resources and that's how the New World came about.
ReplyDeleteDont forget about the people the elites paid for.

Merchantalism is the trading/buying/selling of goods and services. This created more jobs and more money. People found many ways to make money off of mercantilism itself. they sold, bought, and sold again for more money. The Chesapeake people, or the natives, settled to find land, religious freedom and great economic opportunity. The Europeans were not too nice to the natives, they often kicked them off of their land. The natives also suffered from diseases the Eurpeans brought over. the Elite groups from Europe arrived in search of the same things as the natives but were treated a lot differently by the Europeans.
ReplyDeleteMerchantalism also highly relies on raw materials form its colonies
DeleteBasically mercantilism was the british's idea to make profitable trades with other colonies. People settled in the Chesapeake Region for Religious Freedom, New land for crops or just to own land. The native and European relationship was mainly the europeans telling the Natives what to do, forcing them to move away from there home or throwing them into slavery, but on the other hand the europeans were friendly at first and were trading like everything was all gravy. Elites were greedy little boogers. They came to the new land searching for wealth and free labor along with the people they paid to bring along. They typically used the land they claimed for their plantations and what not.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism was a way for the British to stay at power over the colonies by only allowing the colonist to trade with them making them still dependent on their home country for other resources not provided by the new land. The Chesapeake settlements where established for the need of land and with more land came more economic opportunities, also religious freedom was a factor in the growing population. When moving to the new lands the colonist had to deal with the Indians. Most of the immigrants dealt with them by killing them with diseases such as smallpox and malaria, then later on making the remaining ones into slaves. While other colonist such as the French tried to get along with them, by learning the Indians way of life. The Elites came over to gain more wealth from the production of tobacco and sugar. Leading this to result in the use of slaves, and the now social tension between the ethnic groups.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is based on the concept of increasing profits by controlling trade. Wealth, freedom of religions and more economic opportunities is what the Cheapstake region was settled for. The native Americans were kicked off their land and were killed by many of the diseases that the Europeans brought. Elites came over to get more rich in which they did because they would run plantations and own slaves.
ReplyDelete(2nd Period) Mercantilism is a way of trade to gain a large profit. People from Europe settled in Chesapeake Bay because they wanted religious freedom or land to farm tobacco. The Europeans had to bring in tons of slaves to support their growing industry. Once the farms got to big the settlers had to expand and so forced the Natives off so they could farm that land too. When the Settlement was booming Elites started to come over so they too could acquire land for plantations. They would bring with them others who would then be indentured servants for a short time to pay for the travel over.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was a theory that the nations depended on raw materials from its colonies. The reason for settlement in the Chesapeake region was to get land and grow tobacco. When the Europeans arrived they were clueless on ways of living so they went to the natives and slowly started to push them off their own land, or they would die of the diseases brought over by them. The Elites moved for land and money, which increased the amount of slaves. (2nd)
ReplyDeleteGreat job Skylar, don't forget mercantilism was also for profit from the raw materials.
DeleteAwesome Sky wonderful answer
DeleteReally great
You're a rockstar
Mercantilism was the europeans being able to profit off of the new colonies were the only effort "The Motherland" put forward was controlling who the colonies could sell goods to and which goods they could grow. The settlers of the new world decided that enslaving africans, native americans, and to an extent, europeans would allow them to mass produce crops with as little effort possible. This lead them to spending less time in the field, if any, and more time with one another at socially gatherings to improve their social status and develop their legal system to separate themselves from their distant leadership. Unfortunately, this hurt their relationship with the Native Americans for multiple reasons. The Europeans showed up searching for prime cropland and in the process decided to enslave some of the Native people. Did the colonists care that they stripped the Natives of their freedom? Not one bit, they would claim massive areas of land for plantations that produced extensive amounts of crops with almost no cost in labor thanks to slaves (in some cases the only cost was feeding the slaves). Although the slaves were not made up entirely of Native Americans, they were willing to fight the trespassers to defend their homeland and their freedom with little to no success.
ReplyDeleteNice points Robert but could you elaborate on the "enslaving... (Of) Europeans to an extent"?
ReplyDeleteThe development of slavery in southern colonies began as most enterprises in the new world did- for profit. European elites came to the new world to become large, influential , and wealthy landowners. These reasons however were not unique to the south , the settlement of the Cheseapeake Bay was also a business enterprise. Between the 17th and 18th century, Europe had been using a system to maximize profits from the new world, this system was mercantilism. The colonies would ship Europe ( usually only the country that had founded them) raw materials and goods for minimal profit , and Europe would manufacture these materials and sell them back to the colonies for maximum gain. Distinctly in southern colonies , colonists were also trying to make themselves huge monatary gains. This lead to the growing of cash and labor intensive crops. By using slaves these landowners made huge gains at the price of their morality. Slavery expanded the mercantilist system. Socially, slavery has had a lasting impact in southern colonies to the 1960's with the Civil Rights movement. No longer was there a labor force of indentured servants , but a instead a group of repressed people identified by their skin color and their heritage. The fight to overcome these dispositions has lasted till today.
ReplyDeletePolitically, slavery gave people power in the south. Large landowners typically owned slaves. If they owned slaves they were typically wealthy and when these men met up they would all elect the people who had their own interests. Southern colonies thrived on the early slave trade and politically motivated it.
Similarly , the native Americans in and around the colonies were mishandled and abused. The struggle for power between the Europeans and the natives eventually wiped them out and gave the possession of their property to the colonists. All of the hardships expressed in these times were for personal gain , and little else.
Can you please elaborate more on how Chesapeake Bay was "a business enterprise?"
DeleteYou gave a great image of how Slaves (both Indian Slaves and African Slaves) were treated in Slavery, and it gave the feeling of how harsh some colonists were back then, and I think that's something that students like us need to know to sympathize with our past history which will help us have a more better understand of the current unit we are learning about.
DeleteDuring the 16th through 18th century in the early colonies the governments used mercantilism as a way of trading goods to make a profit and then accumulate wealth from those raw materials. Doing so created a large need for workers to produce these raw materials to trade, and this is where slavery comes in. The African slaves help the colonial people become wealthy, especially because the slaves are not very expensive and the owners do not take very good care of their human property.People settled in the land of Chesapeake for their opportunity in religious freedom and great land opportunities. When going to the new land, the settlers had a huge problem with the natives. The leaders of the groups or governments had to decide whether to create piece with the natives and trade with them for their valuable culture or have them as an enemy. The elites came to the new world looking for power, and that is what they found, being one of the wealthier citizens of the
ReplyDeleteThe theory of mercantilism was that by buying raw materials for cheep and make a greater profit by making those raw materials into objects you could use and sell them back to colonies who you bought the raw materials from therefore creating a bigger profit. This is what the Europeans did to maintain their power over other colonies. Chesapeake Bay was settled because of religious freedom, wealth, and the land that was available to grow crops on. The Native Americans were treated just as slaves were. They were mistreated, had the same economic purpose just as slaves did and were also seen as owned. This however was no surprise because of how the Indians viewed the Europeans as having a lot of power and saw them as more doministic but in the beginning they were a little helpful with one another. Elites had moved to the Americas from Europe because they wanted to have more wealth and thought by moving to the Americans they could do so by having plantations and owning slaves.
ReplyDeletePeople settled in cheesecake, Virginia because it had a bay and that was important for trade since the water made it possible for the ships to do the ship thing. Mercantilism was the idea in colonial times that everything should be done for the good of England, including the trade of the colonists (who were just trying to scratch out a living, and didn't take too kindly to being ripped off). Relationships with Native Americans were strained, to say the least. It didn't help that Europeans killed them every chance they got.
ReplyDeleteWhy was the relationship with the native Americans strained?
DeleteThey settled in Chesapeake because they wanted more land and also because of the rich soil which made it easier to grow cash crops like tobacco and sugar so that they could then make more money
DeleteIn the 16th-18th centuries, a practice called Mercantilism became very common. This common practice promoted many regulations that benefited the Country's economy. The settlement of the Chesapeake area was mostly for the Pilgrim's betterment for a stronger economy, better social structure, and a more stable political system. These colonies also had multiple relationships with indians, but varied depending the area, and the indians sold other tribes of their own to the pilgrims fornslavery in exchange of goods such as food, weaponry and other necessary products. All in all, the settlement of the new land was was mainly for Religious freedom, a more stable economy, cheaper land, and the widespread of the European kingdom that is Great Britain
ReplyDeleteI like the edition of selling their own tribesman. That was messed up but they also were trying to gain money in the process so i guess it somewhat benefited them until they all died.
DeleteWhen the new world was "discovered," many European leaders saw it as an opportunity to gain wealth. Much like Africa, it was quickly colonized by different countries, all looking to get their share. This is where the idea of mercantalism comes from. Mother countries colonize other areas, simply for economic gain. The colonists work and farm, and all primary resources are then sold to the Europeans for cheap. Not only do the Europeans get access to extremely cheap goods, but when they sell manufactured goods, (made from those primary resources) they sell them at a high price to their colonists. Because the colonists rely on the mother country, lawfully so, the only way to get these manufactured goods is to buy them from Europe. This creates an easy way for a country to not only gain wealth, but to gain resources for cheap that they may not have in their native area. The Chesapeake area was chosen first and foremost for economic gain. The ability to start over was also appealing to many who were looking for a way to move up in the social hierarchy. Finally, many members of the nobility chose to move to the Americas for the ability to gain land, and therefore power. There was a wide range of how the Native American’s were treated. While some were treated with respect and were seen as a means of trade, many colonists saw them as vile, uncivilized animals. They were kicked from their homes and killed for the lands they occupied; mainly for farming purposes. Many elites came over due to the fact that Europe was running out of land that was available to them. Land equals power and America was full of land ready to be taken.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was a theory that allowed Europeans to trade raw materials between them and the home land and ONLY the home land. They believed that the Europeans shouldn't be allowed to trade with any other colonies, which created controversy and led to the Europeans starting separate routes of trade that were hidden from the home land (aka. the black market.)
ReplyDeleteThe reason the English decided to settle in the Chesapeake region was because they wanted to claim all of the land that they could and grow crops to try and gain profit also while spreading religion and searching for gold and other exports This is when sugar-cane was introduced and found to be their most successful crop. But because it was such a labor intensive crop they had to import laborers which convinced the English that they were too tired for this kind of work and started importing more and more slaves to do it for them.
The Indians were treated fair at first, they were trying to trade and live normally. But then the Europeans started to kick the Indians off of their land and were using them as slaves. Also, may Indians died from the diseases brought over from Britain into the Americas. But, they did learn to compensate with the Indians, they respected their tribe leaders and followed some of the rituals that were performed. They had created "a precarious peace with the tribes that lasted several decades."
The Elites came from Europe to the Americas to gain land and create more profit for themselves. But since the newer settlers had troubles adapting to the peaceful way of life with the Indians, they decided to just kill off all of the Indians and take the land for themselves to create new plantations that would create profit for the new settlers in the area.
Mercantilism, basically it was a theory of trade and the nation wanted to get wealthier and they thought that was the way. They put regulations on the nations commercial products and they hoped from this that it would make the nation stronger.
ReplyDeletePeople settled in the Chesapeake area because there weren't a lot of towns there and the people who were there, were plantation owners with families that all lived together. People went there because they were searching for more and new opportunities. Hoping to start their own plantation and make good money for themselves. In the beginning the Indians and the people in the Chesapeake area tried to understand each other and get along but when more colonists came the Indians got like taken over, ran out, killed whatever. They came from Europe to the Americas to find more land and power and were successful.
Peace out
I like it, straight to the point.
DeleteBetween the 17th and 18th century, slavery helped build the business that the Europeans made in the New World. The theory of Mercantilism is how Europe took control of the New World economically. Europe would take the natural resources from the new world and sold products for an extreme profit. However the southern colonies used slaves for agricultural profit.
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans took over Chespeake Bay for the reason of land expansion to grow crops. However native Americans were driven out by the Europeans or were killed by disease that the Europeans brought from the old world.
The landowners who owned slaves were mostly the elites that came to the colonies to build business.

ReplyDeleteMerchantalism was the belief of the benefits of trading. The English settled in the Chesapeake area to profit from cash crops such as sugar. The English lived among the native americans and respected their rituals, the natives both feared and respect the english for things they had such as guns. The natives were eventually killed off and some died of diseases . Slaves were after first using workers
The British was able to economically control the new colonies further through the concept of mercantilism. Their reason for settling in the Chesapeake area was because there was plenty of land. With the land, they were then able to experiment with new crops. After failing at tobacco and cotton farming, they moved to sugar farming, which turned out to be one of their most important crops. With the growing economy based around sugar plantations, the number of African slaves increased significantly. As for the relationship with the indians, it wasn't a particularly long relationship.. When the Europeans arrived, they brought new diseases that were foreign to the natives, which wiped out nearly all of them, in a very short amount of time. Most of the indians that did survive were turned into slaves. The elites came to America to try to get more rich, like the other farmers that had moved there. Also, the elites wanted to spread their religion, way of life and gain more power.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism helped the British seize the land of the Native Americans and control their colonies. They were hoping to escape religious persecution and find more land for settlement in the New World. After failing with cotton, they had begun growing tobacco in hopes of gaining more wealth from the Brits. After tobacco had risen in popularity, the demand for slaves had begun to grow. Eventually, ships from Africa filled with slaves were brought to the colonies and sold to plantation owners. Because tobacco had begun losing it's value, plantation owners moved on to sugar cane, which was easier to grow. Thanks to this, the colonists were rising in power and wealth.
ReplyDeleteyou have to remeber nobles from england came to get rich also
DeleteOkay so Mercantilism is how English was controlling the Colonies in the Cheseapeake Bay area; which was where the Colonist where because of its land to grow crops. The main crop of all this was tobacco which gained quick popularity and became the staple crop. So after awhile some people from high social order came to the New World to become a plantation owner with slaves to make more money.
ReplyDeleteDont forget indented servants came to not only the rich many people came there different ways.
DeleteMercantilism is what made everybody come to the new world. To claim land for there country. There was the original indented servants that came with the elites that werer able to afford the trip and the land.so when their time was up people looked to slaves for large crops. The cheapsake region was the center of the native Americans and colonists interaction. They got along for a while until the colonists wanted more land so they could grow more crops to send back to the British and later grow.
ReplyDeleteYou also have to know that while some Native Americans were trade with, others were badly treated; they were used as slaves or even killed!
DeleteMercantilism was an economic theory/practice, that was dominant in Europe in the 16th to 18th century. Mercantilism promoted governmental regulation of a nation's economy to increase state power. Colonists settled in the Chesapeake region because they hoped for silver and gold, a passage to Asia, cures for diseases, or anything they can bring back to Europe for a profit. Relations with natives depended highly on the location which the colonists settled, some were hostile, and some were willing to trade with the colonists. Elites from Europe came to the new world seeking wealth and vast available land. The Elites used this land for farms and plantations.
ReplyDeleteThey also settled in the Chesapeake region because it had what they needed to survive such as access to water, fertile soil for crops such as tobacco, provided decent weather for these crops and the right resources for shelter.
Deleteif you added Colin's part to your passage it would be spot on other than that you're golden
Deleteif you added Colin's part to your passage it would be spot on other than that you're golden
DeleteMercantilism is a practice and theory that England would have power over colonies and regulation. Chesapeake was where colonist went to settle in search of opportunities and profit. Natives and colonist settled in same regions and tensions were fine until colonist wanted more land. European colonist came to the new world in search of new and more land for plantation farms.
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned that the Chesapeake region was settled in search of opportunities and profit, which is true but should be explanded on due to they proited socially, economically and politically, each having its own impact on the settling process.
DeleteYou covered all of the key points but if you were to go into a little more detail about the topics. Also, the definition of mercantilism is a little vague.
Delete(2nd).
Mercantilism was created by the British Government and merchants to regulate the economy. The Chesapeake region was chosen because of religious freedom and the amount of land. The settlers that came often grew staple crops such as tobacco. These crops were often labor intensive which made them buy slaves. The more slaves there were the more the social hierarchy was defined. Endentured slaves only lasted so long. That's why the slave trade grew so rapidly. So the colonists could produce more and have it done quickly. The elites came to the new world to gain more land and more wealth. The relationship with the native Americans was not a good one because the English wanted their land.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was a very important concept from the late 16th-18th century and was so popular with Britain because they could easily get raw materials and other goods by exploiting the newly settled colonies. The colonists chose to settle in the Chesapeake region because at this time their main concern was gaining land because land meant wealth. The Chesapeake area was perfect for them because of it's fertile soil so they could grow tons of cash crops like tobacco and sugar. Because there was so much more to harvest, they needed workers that were cheap so they forced the Natives to do their labor for them and eventually had to use African slaves because all the natives were dying from all of the diseases that the Europeans brought over. Elites came to the Americas in search of land and more wealth/power and also to spread their religion.
ReplyDeleteCan you think of anything that political shaped the southern colonies that slavery had a role in? And I pretty much agree with everything you just typed!
DeleteThe idea behind Mercantilism is to gain wealth through trade. The system involves exporting more than importing. This was the system the British Government implemented on the colonies in order to exploit them of their goods with trading laws and tariffs. Settlement in the Chesapeake region was ideal for large scale agriculture because it had an abundance of fertile land and ideal climate. Despite a major population of native americans dying because of diseases, the colonists learned to trade with them, used them for labor and had occasional conflicts with tribes. Many Elites came to the new world in order to generate wealth through their land/business and to spread religion.
ReplyDeleteThe theory of mercantilism during the 17th century was that Europe power houses (England, Spain, Portugal, France, etc.) colonized lands and used those lands for there resources. This usually lead to the mistreating of these colonies and didn't care as long as the colonies delivered what they wanted. The reason the colonists settled in the Chesapeake region was because the soil was fertile and was near water sources. At first the relationship with the Native Americans was friendly because the colonists needed help such as tips on how to survive but later once the colonists wanted more land the Indians weren't so happy about giving up land which lead to disputes. The Elites came to the colonies because they wanted more power and the best way to get that is by having a lot of land which the colonies had a lot of.
ReplyDeleteAlso the Elites were a major player in why slavery was so popular.
DeleteMercantilism was an economic system that helped the colonies succeed from the 16th to 18th century’s it basically said that a country should import a greater amount of goods than it exports in order to maximize profit. When colonist settled they did so on chesapeake land which brought all kinds of disease to the natives and killed off a very big amount of the tribe. Elites also came to the new world for money and power and as soon as they saw a man with a slave they also got their own slaves to work on plantations for them this is how the slaves helped plantations form
ReplyDeleteSlavery had a major role in the development of the southern colonies between 17th and 18th century. Slavery was a cause from European elites traveling to the new world to become large wealthy landowners. They settled in the Chesapeake region because of its vast landfills and rich soil which allowed crops to grow easier and in an abundance. As people started to colonize these areas and start farm, they looked for a way to become rich. Growing crash crops like tobacco and sugarcane were main exports for the new world economically. However, these colonist could not sell their products to other "competitors" or countries because it was against the laws placed on them by England. England used the theory of mercantilism to keep a hold on trade between its colonies and other countries and also to economically grow themselves. Mercantilism is the economic theory promoted by governmental regulations of a nation's economy for the purpose of augmenting state power at the expense of rival national power. So basically, England used the colonies just to gain economic value. It also (in a way) benefited the colonies too because it allowed them to buy slaves and other products to survive. As slavery took a drastic height in the new world it also cause a huge social difference between the colonist and England. Between the colonists rich people got richer and the poor stayed poor with little to no growth in social or money status. Between the colonies and England, England was way more economically and socially supported then the colonist because of the taxes they imported on them. However, the taxes and laws ended up biting England in the butt and have the colonist rebel against them. Colonist were sick of having taxes with no representation in England, so they fought to find a new way to run their land. They wanted a government where people had a day and were represented on major issues. This is what led to the, soon, formation of America's independence from England.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is a theory that was developed in the 16th through 18th century that revolved around making one's economic life stable and making everyone equal. The reason for settling in the Chesapeake was for more social, political, and economic rights. The relationship with Native Americans, however, was hot and cold- with some NA's they would interact by trading. Other NA's, however, would be treated mercilessly; they were used as slaves or even killed. Elites came to the Americas for the vast amount of land available, and they even brought indentured servants, whom they would pay to do their hard labors.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you're saying here. I definitely see what you mean when you describe the relationship with the NA's as "hot and cold." Great post!
Delete"hot and cold" is a really great explanation for the relationship with the Native Americans. I feel like at first when the colonists met them they treated them horribly because they weren't really familiar with who they were and because they were not whitemen. BUT some colonies did warm up to them and actually ended up working alongside them like normal humans. although others didn't take that approach and stayed "hot" the whole time, colonies definitely couldn't makeup their mind on whether or not the native americans were to their liking.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the idea of one country feeding of another's land and resources for to gain wealth for their home land. The host/ colonies are designed only for the home country's interests.
The Chesapeake bay was a wide open area, that could be home to many trading posts and ports. The surrounding land was also fertile and the area has a more favorable growing season than up north. Seeing the potential, the colonists decided to settle there. (those are reasons aren't necessarily unique to this area.
The English,as well as most European powers in the new world, did not treat the native americans with the respect. The only European power that never had many strained relations was the French, (I believe). The Chesapeake settlers relied on agriculture and required more land as their populations grew. This made tensions between the settlers and the natives grow because the natives did not want to give up their lands. A prime example is Bacon's Rebellion. Bacon's rebellion was caused by the desire for more land by the setters, though their governing body was set against it, the people took matters into their own hands and drove the neighboring Indians.
The elites that were given land grants were the slave owning plantation owners, those who farmed for profit. Slavery made the colonial south possible ecomonicaly, farming on a large scale plantation, would be difficult to manage and wouldn't be as cost effective if you had to pay the laborers. Because the south was built around agriculture, it was very rural, and not as community centric or religiously centric as the north. This also effected the way politics were handled because the population was less dense and the majority of the population consisted mostly of slaves, which made it difficult to base things on population because slaves were usaually not considered people.
DeleteAs the New England Colonies were still developing, the theory of mercantilism generated more trade and profit for the english settlers. It was generated more wealth by creating and synthesizing raw materials from the south. In during this spread of mercantilism, settlers from the northern colonies began to migrate further down the coast to Chesapeake Bay to find more freedom in religion, land, farming, and wealth to set up for the future. In doing so, trading was increase and needed more work to make materials. Then that led to enslaving the Native Americans and Africans. They gathered them each one by one, moving the natives along the dusty trails, and the Africans across the ocean to work in the colonies and the south. This was a cruel and unjust act towards the enslaved, no matter how necessary it was to use them. Next upon realizing how the new slaves were a gateway to wealthiness, the European Elites seized the chance and decided to come to the colonial settlements for new plantations and lots of newly prepared slaves ready to break their backs in the fields. This continued for sometime as the Elites bought more and more land and exploited tens of thousands more slaves trying to satisfy their master's greed.
ReplyDeleteDid the New England Colonies have any other trading partners in during the Mercantilism Practice?if so, which other countries?
Deletein the late 16th to the early 18th century, mercantilism was the major opportuinity for people to better their way of life and for the government to stabilize and become more equal. when people came from Europe to live in the chesapeak area the rights for many things including politics and economy became possible, mainly because land was cheap .Unfortunatetly Native Americans became slaves while some helped the settlers survive while the settlers traded with them.
ReplyDeleteThe Elite were also a major point of all of this; without them; slavery might not have been as popular and therefore not so much of a problem.
DeleteBetween the 16th and 18th century mercantilism was the economic stand point that was use. The quote " ones mans trash is another mans glory," is the basic idea of mercantilism. The Chesapeake region was best suited for agriculture, from climate to fertile soil it seems to be the perfect area to settle and farm, with an abundance of land that with more settling would begin to decline. How well the incounters with natives went was based upon how evading Europeans treated the natives as well as how the natives felt towards an outsider, in some cases you would end up with new trade groups in others you had hundreds to thousands dying. Unintentionally Europeans "poisoned" natives with foreign diseases declining the Native American population. Many came for Europe to better themselves and gain a sort of title (wealth came with land, wealth gives you a title), as well as bettering the economy. Many farms be came plantation operations creating a higher disier for slaves.
ReplyDeleteMany colonists settled in the Chesapeake region for the fact of their rich soil compared to the North Colonies, and this led to massive farms to produce raw goods.Slavery in the United States started in the Caribbean Islands/Barbados area. The colonists realized that the way they were used forced labor in the Caribbean would create themselves loads of cash and so they adopted the concept. They then would trade this to their homeland because of mercantilism, in which they would be practically forced to trade back their raw materials to them in which they would make something fancier out of that and trade it right back for more and more and more raw goods. It causes the decline of many raw goods such as tobacco, which many of the Chesapeake region was farming excessively. Mercantilism though is what created economic success for Great Britain, at the beginning of these trades with the New World Colonies. Slavery created more social distinctions/problems with the neighboring Native Americans because some of their own Native people were forced into slavery to eventually die from being overworked and badly cared for. This created a quite negative relationship between the new colonists and the Native Americans. Elites eventually came from Europe in hopes of growing very rich from the newly found cash crops, and for land. They became large plantation owners themselves and bought many slaves in order to create themselves even more loads of riches.
ReplyDeleteI like this post because it's not a list of each topic like most other posts (including mine) You actually have a flowing paragraph, which is a great thing to have considering that it's different than everyone else's and it sounds more intellectual.

ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the belief that your country is the top economic point, and that you expand and sell/trade for the growth of your country. The people decided to settle down at Chesapeake because of the rich soil the area possessed. It was also a bay with good port possibilities. The Europeans did not have a good relationship with the natives; fights for and stealing land, cheating agreements, forcing laws and religion, killings, slavery, even war. The Elite came to the Americas because they wanted to take advantage of the open land. The elites eventually started buying more and more slaves until it became an average thing and it became a sort of plantation.
ReplyDeleteSlavery didnt make the poorer poorer. The way it worked was that it made the rich richer and the poor rich. For example, theoretical situation, if I was a lower-class white man but I had enough money to buy a slave and I did. I have worked him/ her day and night in the cotton fields. Then it seems that he/she has made me enough money to buy more slaves, and this process would keep continuing and continuing and then I would just became a filthy rich white man. Simple, But not sure if that was the best example to get my point across But that was the closest thing I can think of. If I am wrong can you please explain to me why?
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was practiced from the 16 to the 18 century and caused regulation of a nation's economy. Chesapeake settlement caused better rights for economy, politics and socially. When the colonists came to the new land, they treated some indian tribes with respect but some were turned into slaves. Since the indians thought they were tricking the colonists by "selling them land", they did it cheap and the colonists took advantage and took over the lands.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the belief of profit from the trade of raw materials. The reasons for settlement of the Chesapeake was for riches, religious freedom, and land. Although, the natives were the first on these settlements they were treated as slaves and were forced to leave their land. Also, the elites came to America so they could become wealthy and own plantations. The elite also brought people along with them and the people would repay the debt by working on the plantation of the elite.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism was an economic theory heavily used in the 16 through 18 century. It helped regulate the economy and make everyone equal. The Chesapeake region was greatly populated due to its religious freedoms, vast amount of land, and its economic opportunities. The relationship with the Native Americans was usually poor as many of them were either used as slaves or killed. Elites invaded and became wealthy landowners, able to grow cash crops and make a huge profit off of it.
ReplyDeleteMercantilism is the idea that you buy natural resources and then turn them into finished products and sell them to other people, countries, etc for profit. This allowed Britain to make a huge amount of revenue from widely avalable natural resources. This is why the Chesapeake bay comes in to play not only as a hub for natural resources but for religious tolerance as well. Turning all of those raw materials into a finished product does require a large labor force. That's where slaves come in. With slave labor being relatively cheap it allowed the Brittish's profits to skyrocket which made the gap between the rich and poor widen. When the new settlers would arrive they had no basic knowledge on how to survive, so they turned to the natives for help. Eventually when the Europeans got all of the information they needed from the Natives they just brushed them aside and took their land. Most of the Europeans who threw the natives off of their own land were Elites. People who thrived in the old world and are now trying to thrive in the new world as well. When the Elites acquired a multitude of cheap land they simply became plantation owners who turned natural resources into finished goods with none other than slave labor.
ReplyDeleteSlaves contributed to the economy by producing many goods. The goods were then traded all around the world but we primarily traded with Britain. Saves contributed to the Social organization with racism. Everyone in the South thought that african-americans were not even human because of the color of their skin. Since we didn't think they were human, we treated them like wild animals. Slaves contributed to politics by not contributing. Since we didn't think they were human, we didn't let them have anything to do with the U.S government. Mercantilism is the belief in profitable trading. For example, Americans trading with Britain to make a profit.

ReplyDeleteTo keep the Americas devoted to England, the King created Mercantilism. This limited the colonies to only trade with the English. Colonists got tired of this and started trading with the Spanish and French via the Black Market.
ReplyDeleteThe reason settlement in the Chesapeake region was basically for vast flat farmland. With huge plots of land, people could create giant forms known as plantations. With lots of land to maintain, people couldn't afford labor, so they turned to free labor from the African slaves.
The relationship with the Natives fluctuated over time. At first, the Europeans were afraid of the Natives, so they killed them if they got to close. Then they realized that the natives were people too, so they tried to form a relationship with them and grew accustomed to their culture. But then, new colonists came from Europe and just didn't care about the Natives and decided to kill most of them.
Elites came from Europe mainly because of land and slaves. They knew that, because they had the money, they could start huge plantations that was maintained for virtually no money and they could make almost 100% profit. They made even more money than what they already had and that's what Elitists want most.

DeleteThroughout the 16th - 18th century, the development of slavery brought upon a plantation economy (rice and tobacco), a wider gap in the socially structure, and plantation owners quickly rose to political power. growing tobacco and rice required labor, and lots of it. Many people grew fond of the idea of indentured servants and black slaves because it required less manual labor for themselves at a cheap price. In the southern colonies, the gap between the rich and poor was steadily expanding. If you were a white male, owned land and owned a plantation, you were set for success in the Americas. If you also qualified for the aristocratic life stated above, then congratulations, you now also have a large sum of political power!!
ReplyDeleteMercantilism, exercised control over the trade of the colonies, and led to greatly affecting the political and economical development. Mercantilism was the policy in Europe where the government of the mother country controlled the industry and trade of other, weaker settlements with the idea that national strength and economic security comes from exporting more than what is imported.
The chesapeake region was a great place for settlement for the colonists. The region was vast land that was perfect for farming. Farming was a major profit back then so not only were they enjoying their own land, but they were also making money off of it by growing tobacco and rice.
Their relationship with the Native Americans was mostly negative. Yes, they lived with each other and realized that they were people too, but as new colonists came, the less sensitive they were towards the natives.
Elites came to the Americas from Europe in hopes of a better life, to get rich. Coming to the Americans meant that you could get a lot of land for a bargain. People new that they could make more money here than back at home, it was like starting over for so many settlers.
in late 16th-18th century mercantilism played a big role in all settlements that occurred during that time. This strategy helped out the economy tremendously because the slaves were not getting paid and were owned which means that is less money people had to pay for their work to be done in the plantations of the north (Chesapeake region). The plantations included vast amounts of tobacco and rice. although only able to trade with the English, colonists found a total loophole so to say and this is how the "black market" came about. Instead they traded with france and spain. Sneaky and illegal, but smart. WHen colonists arrived, they of course encountered Native Americans. both the south and north regions responded differently to them though. some saw them as actual people{which they were} but some saw them as savages or animals and killed them even though they were there first. Ultimately, all these mercantilists or Elites took over land, cultivated it and made use out of it, and sold or traded it to other countries or lands. The way the went about it, as far as kicking out natives and owning slaves, might not have been so great but they achieved their goal of being prime doers of Mercantilism.
ReplyDeleteMecantism is an economic practice from 16th - 18th century. Reasons for settlement in Chesapeake was for better rights for society and most importantly economic rights. The Indians shared a love hate relationship with the settlers, some regions traded and helped get started, but other regions treated the Indians as slaves.
