Students,
Today we examined the United States Declaration of Independence. We read through it privately and identified what we felt was the most important parts and what needed / could have been changed to make it a better document.
Link to Worksheet - Draw a three ringed Venn Diagram on the back
This was a good experience, but things got really exciting when you started comparing the Declaration of Independence to similar documents from Egypt in 1922 and Texas in 1836. You identified common themes between the documents, how the US may or may not have influenced these future bids for independence, and finally (hopefully) connected the beliefs and attitudes of our founding fathers with those of enlightenment thinkers like John Locke.

Students,
You had an awesome opportunity today to go to the college fair here at the High School today. Several colleges from all over the state, including some of the larger ones, came by to talk to you all about your futures in education! I hope that all of you get into your first choice of colleges!
While we were in class we are looking at another DBQ! This one is from 1999. All of you addressed concerns with the actual analysis (and grouping) of primary source documents. My goal of these exercises is to let you practice the skills necessary for the DBQ so when it comes time for the actual test you will have the confidence needed to succeed!
Below you will find a link to the DBQ so that you can finish filling out your G.O. for the sources over the weekend. While I don't normally like giving you homework over the weekend the college fair prevented some of you from having enough time in class to finish the assignment. I have faith in your ability to complete this, and if you have any questions post a reply on this blog and I will be able to reply to it quickly!

Students,
Today we used our notes and the textbook to work together to complete the picture of the British imperial policies that incited rebellion in the colonies. Actions like the Stamp Act of 1765 or the Declaratory act of 1766 are shown to have been some of the major motivating factors for declaring our independence from England. Remember in 1763 we were proud to be British and saw ourselves as such, it was the fact that these feelings were not reciprocated that we start to see tensions and reactions to actions develop.
Here is a link to the Graphic Organizer we filled out!
REMINDER:
Your Homework from yesterday is due tomorrow either via the blog or typed up and printed out!
The end of the six weeks is nigh! Make sure your binder is in order for our final Binder check (major grade) of the six weeks. There is an updated list of everything you need to have in there on my board in the classroom!

Students,
Today we took a breather from PPT and enjoyed the PBS documentary Liberty: Reluctant Revolutionaries. This documentary exposes both sides of the lead up to the revolution showing us that both sides American and British share the blame for the distrust and resentment held between the two. For Homework tonight please review your notes and respond to one of the prompts below.
Instructions: please type your reply and keep the length between 150-250 words. You may post your response on the blog or you may print it out. If you print, do not forget to include a full heading (name, class / period, date) on the left hand margin. The assignment number will be 19. This will be due on Friday September 26th!
Prompt 1:
During the decade before the outbreak of war, what were the two major attitudes of the colonists toward Parliament and the British Empire?
Prompt 2:
What could have prevented the colonists' declaring independence and going to war?
If you completely zoned out during the video here is a link for you to refresh your memory:

Today we finished up most of the power point we started yesterday and I must applaud you for your stamina. Listening to me talk is not always the most interesting thing in the world but I appreciate your dedication and attention spans. We focused today on some of the individual actions taken by the British to anger the colonists ( Sugar Act, Quartering Act, Stamp Act, Declaratory Act, Townshend Acts[duties]). Both sides harbored great distrust and and resentment towards the others and Britain's actions after the French / Indian war reflect that. Please take a moment to review the few slides we did not finish in class, and write a quick summary at the end of your Cornell notes.

Today we explored the enlightenment and its affects an the American Colonies. We looked at the conflicting points of view of Thomas Hobbes (all men are greedy and cruel) and John Locke (all men are considerate and reasonable). We also took a look at how their opinions and teachings actually made their way into our own way of thinking in America.
Life, Liberty, and possessions VS. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

Today we attempted to develop thesis statements in preparation for the AP exam in the fall. We are working with several opposing schools of thought, and that is okay. The entire exercise is simply to practice developing a thesis, which is arguably the most important part of an essay. I will continually revisit theses through out year.

Today we finished up the colonial society power point that we started last week. We covered 1700-1775. This was a period of growing tensions between the colonies and England. Between the ideas of Mercantilism and all the laws implemented by the English on its behalf it is no surprise that the colonists decided enough was enough. See below for the power point.

Today we discussed four conflicts that shaped the colonial world; Bacon's Rebellion, King Philips War, the "Glorious Revolution", and the English Civil War.
Each of these events happened independently with their own sets of circumstances leading up to them. However each of them play an important role in the build-up of tensions that ultimately result in Revolution. Take a minute and review what you've discovered and if you feel so inclined check them against what has been posted in the past. Today we examined the founding of the original colonies. Who started them? Why did they bother to do so? How did they make their money? these were just a few of the questions we took a look at. We implemented a 1- 3 - 6 protocol to make sure the vast amount of information was shared with everyone. Below is the graphic organizer we used. If you were absent, you can fill in the chart from the web, or you should feel free to drop by my tutorials (3:30 - 4:00) to get time with the books.

Today we unfortunately had to back track and finish up our power point from Friday, which left us with less time than planned for our activity today. I would like to remind all of you that visiting the blog is a major component for the class and will often be the difference between a class being successful and the class that falls behind.
Okay, lecture aside. We dug into what the European powers were actually doing in the new world. Why they were there, how they interacted with the natives and even their motives for expansion and how they chose to accomplish their goals.
