Students,
Today I decided I was being lazy, and that this teaching thing is exhausting. So you all being such good students decided that you were going to design a mini-lesson to teach your peers tomorrow. We broke into groups and each of you were given a piece of legislation that was passed during the Civil War that has an impact on American History that reaches into the next semester. See the below link for any missing information that you need.

Students,
Today we examined two letters written by civil war soldiers reflecting on their experiences during the war. Regardless of whether these men fought for the Union or the Confederacy they have a shared experience and this comes out in the letters. To analyze them we used H.I.P.P
H: Historical Context
I: Intended Audience
P: Purpose
P: Point of View
If you were absent you will need to see me in class to get the packet to complete the assignment.
After we examined the letters we took a look at two popular songs during the Civil War (Battle hymn of the Republic for the North, and Dixie Land for the South). Here you got to do some independent analysis and compare these two songs. Trying to pick apart their importance to the different causes and motivations held by each side.
Reminders:
Dual Credit - Your rough drafts are due on the Monday November 30th!

Today we began watching the PBS documentary The West: Empire on the Trails this production provides us insight into the reasoning to move West in the new United States. It shows us the struggles encountered by settlers and their often time tense relationships with the Natives.
The beauty of this documentary is that it lets you experience this information through personal accounts of individuals journeys in this newly acquired untamed wilderness. Helping you gain a human perspective on this drastic shift in United States history.
It is unfortunately only available to me in HD because I am an Amazon Prime subscriber, but I will post a low quality link below for those of you that were absent.

Today we examined the war of 1812. We looked at three different types of sources to fill out a complete set of notes. We examined James Madisons 1812 war message to congress in an attempt to identify the reasons we went to war with Britain at all.
We once again relied upon John Green (I still don't have much of a voice) to examine and explore causes and effects of the war of 1812 on America.
Next we turned to Partners and our good friend Alan Brinkley to fill in the missing details of information.
Being able to address an issue from multiple sources is a great way to create a complete picture of whatever you are creating; be it an AP free response question, or a Dual-Credit research paper. looking a varying sources provides a wide exposure to ideas and view points that construct a more complete view of the topic at hand.

Reminders
Retest is now available please come in to tutorials sometime next week to take a stab at it. I will make this announcement in class on Friday as well.

Apparently I had 84 absences today! woo! All this means is that instead of being able to have a relaxing time in class you will have to have a less relaxing hour or so at home to watch / take Cornell Notes over the video that was shown today!
So please watch the video below and take a full set (3 questions / summary) of Cornell Notes to be turned in by Monday the 19th! This is a grade!
I will have one bonus showing of this video on Friday the 16th after school.

Students,
Today we examined the United States Declaration of Independence. We read through it privately and identified what we felt was the most important parts and what needed / could have been changed to make it a better document.
Link to Worksheet - Draw a three ringed Venn Diagram on the back
This was a good experience, but things got really exciting when you started comparing the Declaration of Independence to similar documents from Egypt in 1922 and Texas in 1836. You identified common themes between the documents, how the US may or may not have influenced these future bids for independence, and finally (hopefully) connected the beliefs and attitudes of our founding fathers with those of enlightenment thinkers like John Locke.

Students,
Today we took a breather from PPT and enjoyed the PBS documentary Liberty: Reluctant Revolutionaries. This documentary exposes both sides of the lead up to the revolution showing us that both sides American and British share the blame for the distrust and resentment held between the two. For Homework tonight please review your notes and respond to one of the prompts below.
Instructions: please type your reply and keep the length between 150-250 words. You may post your response on the blog or you may print it out. If you print, do not forget to include a full heading (name, class / period, date) on the left hand margin. The assignment number will be 3. This will be due on Monday October 5th!
Prompt 1:
During the decade before the outbreak of war, what were the two major attitudes of the colonists toward Parliament and the British Empire?
Prompt 2:
What could have prevented the colonists' declaring independence and going to war?
If you completely zoned out during the video here is a link for you to refresh your memory:

Students,
Today we started walking the Road to Revolution, by examining French and Indian war. We talked about how this conflict brought to the forefront the societal differences of the British and the American colonists and created friction between the two parties that would eventually (13 years later) snowball into the American Revolution. Below see copies of the PPT

Students,
I apologize for the late upload, but here are the enlightenment notes from yesterday.
They are pretty simple and straightforward with the most important slide for the course being the last slide considering how the enlightenment effected the colonies.
You missed out on great discussion if you were gone.

After those two paragraphs have been completed you should work on creating a detailed outline for the remaining two body paragraphs
DONT PUT YOUR NAME ON THIS PAPER
Reminders:

Students,
Today we looked at how we write thesis for my class when a prompt is provided, and for my Dual Credit students we briefly discussed what was important when you are writing a thesis that is not inspired by a prompt. Remember both cases are dependent on the fact that you are making an argument!
For simplicity sake and in my class you are more than welcome to use the formula
X. a, b, c, Y. (and on occasion Z)
X= counter argument
{abc}= support
Y= your argument
Z= time frame or audience (restrictions of the prompt)
your tests were abysmal...we addressed this today.

Students.
Today we continued to examine the founding of the original colonies. Who started them? Why did they bother to do so? How did they make their money? these were just a few of the questions we took a look at. We implemented a 1- 3 - 6 protocol to make sure the vast amount of information was shared with everyone. Below is the graphic organizer we used. If you were absent, you can fill in the chart from the web, or you should feel free to drop by my tutorials (3:30 - 4:00) to get time with the books.
