Students,
Today we finished our discussion on Reconstruction PPT below.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_Br2RBwz0R7bE42TzdneVhaMG8/view?usp=sharing
This concluded our unit on the Civil war and Reconstruction, and we dove right into our review during class. I listened to your pleas and your cries, and at least for our last test I have crafted a review that, in addition to vocabulary, asks you questions that you should be prepared to answer. Hopefully this provides you with a better chance at this test.

Today we began to wrap our minds around the problem of reconstruction. How can you re-incorporate half of the country in such a way that people are willing to live with each other side by side. How can people who have been fighting against each other for the past 4 years see eye to eye on anything?
If you were gone, you will need to come talk to me to discuss what you have missed.

Students,
Today we worked with primary sources to identify the motivations for soldiers during the civil war. We used the SOAPSTONE method to help us in our letter / journal reading and draw conclusion about these individuals who were often knowingly marching to their death.
If you were absent you will need to see me in class to get the packet to complete the assignment.
After we examined the letters we took a look at two popular songs during the Civil War (Battle hymn of the Republic for the North, and Dixie Land for the South). Here you got to do some independent analysis and compare these two songs. Trying to pick apart their importance to the different causes and motivations held by each side.

DC - We turned in our claims and began working on our Outlines. This means we have essentially begun writing our actual paper. We have until December 8th to get this paper knocked out! Stop by if you need any help.
AP - Students, I heard your concerns. I listened to your pleas and suggestions. We approached a DBQ slightly differently today. We took the time to individually analyze sources and then group them together. Hopefully this helped set the expectation that is needed to successfully complete one of the most critical parts of a DBQ.

Binder Checks were today, I am planning on giving final progress reports tomorrow.
Today we finished watching the PBS documentary The West: Empire on the Trails this production provides us insight into the reasoning to move West in the new United States. It shows us the struggles encountered by settlers and their often time tense relationships with the Natives.
The beauty of this documentary is that it lets you experience this information through personal accounts of individuals journeys in this newly acquired untamed wilderness. Helping you gain a human perspective on this drastic shift in United States history.
It is unfortunately only available to me in HD because I am an Amazon Prime subscriber, but I will post a low quality link below for those of you that were absent.

Students,
Today I took a page out of last Units book and found a strategy that you all seemed to find effective as far as remembering the content is concerned. 90% of you answered questions regarding 'The Acts' of Great Britain towards America (Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Quartering Act, Intolerable Acts, etc.). I feel like this was due to the fact that we covered this particular bit of information on three separate occasions.
In an attempt to replicate this success I am covering some of the major topics from this Unit (Westward Expansion, Hudson River School, The Marshall Court, Missouri compromise, and the second great awakening) by having you research them as a group. We will be revisiting this content a few more times, so that hopefully when it comes time you can recall this information with little struggle, and even comment and draw your own personal conclusions based on the information.
See below for the G.O. we used if you were gone today.

Students,
Today we examined the war of 1812. We looked at three different types of sources to fill out a complete set of notes. We examined James Madisons 1812 war message to congress in an attempt to identify the reasons we went to war with Britain at all.
We once again relied upon John Green (I still don't have much of a voice) to examine and explore causes and effects of the war of 1812 on America.
and then we turned to Partners and our good friend Alan Brinkley to fill in the missing details of information.
Being able to address an issue from multiple sources is a great way to create a complete picture of whatever you are creating; be it an AP free response question, or a Dual-Credit research paper. looking a varying sources provides a wide exposure to ideas and view points that construct a more complete view of the topic at hand.

Reminders
Retest is now available please come in to tutorials sometime next week to take a stab at it. I will make this announcement in class on Monday as well.
My goal for the unit test is November 3rd.

Today you took your PSAT, how exhausting but ultimately informative once you get your scores back. In my class we reviewed what we talked about with Jefferson yesterday and responded to the questions "Should Jefferson be revered or reviled"? I hope that it was an enjoyable day for all involved. Students,
Today we talked about our writing. In our AP classes we discussed construction of a thesis. This is something that we have done in the past, but a large majority of you struggled with, hopefully today addressed some of your concerns with writing a thesis for your essays during the AP exam. If your notes were a little lack luster, than click below for a link to the power point that addresses some of the issues when writing a thesis.

Dual Credit on the other hand, started down the arduous road that is your research paper. This will be a tough eight weeks but nothing that you can not handle. I will walk you through the process but you have to do the work, if you don't it will drastically affect your grade!
Remember the pieces of this project have individual due dates click below for the letter and list of dates

Today we reflected on the past six weeks. What can you do improve? What goals can you set for yourself to improve? How can I as your teacher help you attain those goals?
I want you to succeed and will do everything in my power to help you, this is a rigorous course that you are expected to take ownership of. When you do, together we will accomplish your goals.
Enjoy your long weekend.

Students,
Today we presented our American Revolution timelines, it was a laid back Monday. But you were exposed to lots of important information. When you looked at the other timelines I hope you noticed that most of your events were the same, with a few exceptions, which I hope highlighted their importance.
You were also assigned homework that will be due Wednesday, prior to your test. It covers information that we have briefly discussed but will be essential to your test. You must delve into the Constitution and the articles of confederation for your answers. I believe that all of you can be familiar with the documents if you apply yourself slightly outside of class.

you will need to read the articles and the constitution. Drawing upon what you know of our government and how the debate played out. (power point Friday Oct 3rd) you will identify what the problem of each article of the articles of confederation, then identify the location in the constitution that addresses that issue.

Grade Day,
I have been getting a massive influx of late work today, I am betting that it is because grades are due. The grades WILL have points deducted and while better than the 1 that is currently in place they WILL negatively impact your grade. lets get work done on time every time, so that we can all avoid the stress that this day brings with it.
That aside, we talked about the weaknesses of the Articles of confederation and the writing of the Constitution during class today. Some classes got further than others, I blame homecoming fever. So if your class did not get through the entire PPT please look below so that you don't fall behind on important issues.

Students,
Today we started a mini-research project in class. We are creating a timeline of the American Revolution, examining major events that shaped the outcome of the conflict and the players that influenced its path. This is created entirely from information that you find while researching the American Revolution; what do you think is important? what do you think are key points within the conflict for our independence?
These are tough questions but I am interested in your position and your ability to develop an argument from information that you find working with your group. We will be finishing up this assignment tomorrow and if we have time also presenting the finished product. I would like to reiterate the importance of at home research for this assignment as well, doing some leg work for your group at home will significantly improve your experience tomorrow.

Today we examined the United States Declaration of Independence. We read through it privately and identified what we felt was the most important parts and what needed / could have been changed to make it a better document.
Link to Worksheet - Draw a three ringed Venn Diagram on the back
This was a good experience, but things got really exciting when you started comparing the Declaration of Independence to similar documents from Egypt in 1922 and Texas in 1836. You identified common themes between the documents, how the US may or may not have influenced these future bids for independence, and finally (hopefully) connected the beliefs and attitudes of our founding fathers with those of enlightenment thinkers like John Locke.

Students,
You had an awesome opportunity today to go to the college fair here at the High School today. Several colleges from all over the state, including some of the larger ones, came by to talk to you all about your futures in education! I hope that all of you get into your first choice of colleges!
While we were in class we are looking at another DBQ! This one is from 1999. All of you addressed concerns with the actual analysis (and grouping) of primary source documents. My goal of these exercises is to let you practice the skills necessary for the DBQ so when it comes time for the actual test you will have the confidence needed to succeed!
Below you will find a link to the DBQ so that you can finish filling out your G.O. for the sources over the weekend. While I don't normally like giving you homework over the weekend the college fair prevented some of you from having enough time in class to finish the assignment. I have faith in your ability to complete this, and if you have any questions post a reply on this blog and I will be able to reply to it quickly!

Students,
Today we used our notes and the textbook to work together to complete the picture of the British imperial policies that incited rebellion in the colonies. Actions like the Stamp Act of 1765 or the Declaratory act of 1766 are shown to have been some of the major motivating factors for declaring our independence from England. Remember in 1763 we were proud to be British and saw ourselves as such, it was the fact that these feelings were not reciprocated that we start to see tensions and reactions to actions develop.
Here is a link to the Graphic Organizer we filled out!

The end of the six weeks is nigh! Make sure your binder is in order for our final Binder check (major grade) of the six weeks. There is an updated list of everything you need to have in there on my board in the classroom!

Students,
Today we took a breather from PPT and enjoyed the PBS documentary Liberty: Reluctant Revolutionaries. This documentary exposes both sides of the lead up to the revolution showing us that both sides American and British share the blame for the distrust and resentment held between the two. For Homework tonight please review your notes and respond to one of the prompts below.
Instructions: please type your reply and keep the length between 150-250 words. You may post your response on the blog or you may print it out. If you print, do not forget to include a full heading (name, class / period, date) on the left hand margin. The assignment number will be 19. This will be due on Friday September 26th!
Prompt 1:
During the decade before the outbreak of war, what were the two major attitudes of the colonists toward Parliament and the British Empire?
Prompt 2:
What could have prevented the colonists' declaring independence and going to war?
If you completely zoned out during the video here is a link for you to refresh your memory:

Students,
Today we finished up most of the power point we started yesterday and I must applaud you for your stamina. Listening to me talk is not always the most interesting thing in the world but I appreciate your dedication and attention spans. We focused today on some of the individual actions taken by the British to anger the colonists ( Sugar Act, Quartering Act, Stamp Act, Declaratory Act, Townshend Acts[duties]). Both sides harbored great distrust and and resentment towards the others and Britain's actions after the French / Indian war reflect that. Please take a moment to review the few slides we did not finish in class, and write a quick summary at the end of your Cornell notes.

Today we explored the enlightenment and its affects an the American Colonies. We looked at the conflicting points of view of Thomas Hobbes (all men are greedy and cruel) and John Locke (all men are considerate and reasonable). We also took a look at how their opinions and teachings actually made their way into our own way of thinking in America.
Life, Liberty, and possessions VS. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

Students,
Today we attempted to develop thesis statements in preparation for the AP exam in the fall. We are working with several opposing schools of thought, and that is okay. The entire exercise is simply to practice developing a thesis, which is arguably the most important part of an essay. I will continually revisit theses through out year.

Students,
Today we finished up the colonial society power point that we started last week. We covered 1700-1775. This was a period of growing tensions between the colonies and England. Between the ideas of Mercantilism and all the laws implemented by the English on its behalf it is no surprise that the colonists decided enough was enough. See below for the power point.

Students,
Today we discussed four conflicts that shaped the colonial world; Bacon's Rebellion, King Philips War, the "Glorious Revolution", and the English Civil War.
Each of these events happened independently with their own sets of circumstances leading up to them. However each of them play an important role in the build-up of tensions that ultimately result in Revolution. Take a minute and review what you've discovered and if you feel so inclined check them against what has been posted in the past. We will be discussing the events and their place in the grand scheme of things later this week.

Students,
Today we examined the founding of the original colonies. Who started them? Why did they bother to do so? How did they make their money? these were just a few of the questions we took a look at. We implemented a 1- 3 - 6 protocol to make sure the vast amount of information was shared with everyone. Below is the graphic organizer we used. If you were absent, you can fill in the chart from the web, or you should feel free to drop by my tutorials (3:30 - 4:00) to get time with the books.

Important things to remember and bring to discussion tomorrow morning;
Not all colonies were founded by the kindest of people (Georgia) was initially a debtors colony.
Religion played a large role in the motivations of colonists.

Binder check on Tuesday September 9th!
AP Contracts were due today!
Your first test will land on or around September 19th.
Looking ahead: If you are interested in getting ahead for tomorrow read up on King Phillips War, the English Civil War, Bacon's Rebellion, and the Glorious Revolution.

Students,
Today we unfortunately had to back track and finish up our power point from Friday, which left us with less time than planned for our activity today. I would like to remind all of you that visiting the blog is a major component for the class and will often be the difference between a class being successful and the class that falls behind.
Okay, lecture aside. We dug into what the European powers were actually doing in the new world. Why they were there, how they interacted with the natives and even their motives for expansion and how they chose to accomplish their goals. If you misplace or need another copy of the Graphic Organizer check the link below. (The feedback I have received indicates that you would like me to leave the URL intact instead of making it look pretty)

French / Dutch - page 22
Spanish - page 10 and 12
English - page 19 and 23
Relevant sections - pages 7, 12, and 20
REMINDER: Notebook check on Tuesday Sep 9!
Come prepared with your notebook in order. I will be checking for all sections of the table of contents posted in the room. I will also be grading individual assignments at this time (#5 and #6) make sure you are prepared and caught up!

Students,
Today we took a look at Pre-columbian societies outside of North America so that we could understand who the other European powers (Spanish, English, French) colonizing the Americas were interacting with. And try to delve deeper into understanding the cultures of the native peoples. We discussed the idea that trade had different meanings for each of the two cultures while remaining very similar on the surface. We also talked about differing ideas of warfare and how and why battles were fought. These surface similarities that carried several cultural differences is key for understanding some of the roots of conflict between European and Native peoples.
Linked is the power point we discussed.
Your responsibility for the weekend is to examine the last three to four slides of the power point that we did not get to in class and complete your notes. We will discuss them when we get back on Tuesday from our long weekend.

Today we presented out our researched information regarding three major Native American tribes; the Navajo, Iroquois, and the Natchez. As a class we determined that each of these societies while unique had several similarities to each other. Including but not limited too; extensive trade, matrilineal inheritance, and agriculture. We also delved into their differences; political organization, social organization, and religious importance.
Do not forget that for homework this evening I would like you to review your Cornell Note sheet from yesterday and today and generate a summary of the ideas that were introduced and discussed.
Reminders: Empathy Essay is due tomorrow Friday August 29th!

Today we talked about campus wide expectations...
BE - Respectful
BE - Responsible
BE - Safe
these expectations were covered in different iterations all day; from before school to after school expectations all the way to what Seguin H.S. expects of your behavior in the restroom. I would like to thank all of you for your participation while we played "scenes from a hat", and I look forward to covering my classroom expectations, CHAMPS, and PBIS with you tomorrow.
For homework I would strongly encourage you to take a minute and reflect on the 3 BE's of our campus wide expectations. They will strongly influence your year in my classroom. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them publicly here, or privately at my E-mail. Twomack@seguin.k12.tx.us

I am now using google docs, since the school web filter blocked imgur. I hope that this works for everyone out there.

Students,
Until I find a suitable Imgur.com replacement, I will be unable to upload power points to the blog. The new web filter at the high school has blocked the site. I will keep you posted.

Students,
Today we took a look at the history and culture of South East Asia. Attached is a link to the power point that we followed. Do not forget how to take Cornell notes we will more than likely be using them for the remainder of the year.
